Dr. Laurie Green

Dr. Green Is So Disinterested

It has taken me several years to be able to write a review for Dr. Laurie Green because of how upset I was.

In short, she is highly experienced, accredited, and educated, she may still be the best choice for you if you are 67 years old with triplets.

I strongly encourage EVERYONE ELSE to leave her practice at the first sign of any red flags.

It took me months to feel courageous enough to leave her practice and it was the best decision I made for myself.

Since leaving her office I have come to find out that many nurses, doulas, and other moms agree with my assessment of her reputation.

Don’t let her educational accolades fool you, she is way beyond interested in providing quality care to all of her patients.

IMHO, I think she just needs to retire, she isn’t doing a good job anymore.

Many of her “good” reviews even mention her horrible bedside manner the bar for decent care in SF is just super low.

Here are just a few of the highlights from my experience with her:

1. During a typical 4-month pregnancy visit Dr. Green thrusts two fingers in my anus and proceeds to wipe fecal matter on a piece of special paper in front of me (and my husband who was sitting right next to me).

I turn to my husband with wide eyes and then turn to her and suggest she entered the wrong hole. (I was so shocked I barely even knew what to say).

This was her response almost verbatim: I am testing you for colon cancer. I didn’t want to tell you because the warning may have made you tense up.

She was testing me for colon cancer in response to an answer I provided on one of her forms about how some of my close relatives had passed away.

First of all, you can’t find an oncologist who would a) ever conduct that type of screening test and b) do so on a patient as young as I was.

But never mind that, testing someone for *anything* without telling them, asking permission, or warning them is simply outrageous if not sexual assault.

My husband and I spent most of the day in shock about the visit, it was so egregious it was difficult to even process.

2. I had severe and extreme nausea for the first 6 months of my pregnancy and I would complain about struggling to even leave my house which was in turn causing me some sadness.

She would say rude things like “I have other patients who can’t stop throwing up and they are on IV drips every week, so at least you don’t have that”.

Nevertheless I continued to mention that I was struggling and asked if there was a doula or support person I could hire to help me physically or emotionally, she responded “it’s too early to provide you with a list of doulas you can hire”, and only after asking for 3 appointments in a row did she begrudgingly acquiesce and provide me with an (outdated) list of doulas.

She was never once supportive, compassionate, or helpful in trying to provide me some relief.

She would say “well, I could give you depression meds but the nausea will be over before they start working…”.

This contrasts so starkly with another doctor I ended up seeing who was apologetic, recommended a therapist who specializes in women’s health issues and connected me with a pregnancy support group to feel a sense of community during the difficult times.

I ended up seeing the therapist who was immensely helpful.

I just needed some temporary additional support but Dr. Green is so disinterested in helping with common pregnancy conditions she can’t even take the time to explore solutions.

3. She is perpetually in a rush. My husband and I began prioritizing our list of questions because we knew we couldn’t ever get her to stay in the room for all of them.

She would begin answering questions while walking out of the room, literally.

Her voice would just trail off down the hall as she walked away.

I encourage all of you to ask your insurance to explain what length of time her appointments are billed at.

You may not be surprised to find out that she bills insurance for more than the 8.5 minutes she is in the room with you.

Yet makes you feel like a freak for coming to an appointment with a few questions that may require 10 minutes of her time.

Don’t take my word for it, just notice the amount of time she spends with you.

Does she ask if you have additional questions? Does she stand by the door and walk out without ending the appointment?

4. By matter of practice, I was never once asked by a nurse or Dr. Green to change out of my pants and put a robe/cloth on in preparation for a visit with Dr. Green.

She consistently requested that I undress while she was in the room talking to me (pretty hard to listen attentively or take notes while changing) or even worse, almost always undressed me herself.

I had over-the-bump leggings on and she would just fish her hands right up my shirt all the way to my bra and yank my pants down and leave them around my thighs/knees while she listened to babies heartbeat etc.

Again, at best, wildly inappropriate, boarding on assault at worst.

5 Reviews on Dr. Laurie Green

  1. The visit was short and sweet.

She didn’t deliver a baby for me. I just needed routine care. She provided competent care with no frills. Felt confident that she knew what she was doing. She gave good advice and I like her. The visit was short and sweet.

  2. she will know how to tackle them with complete confidence.

Dr. Green has been my OB/GYN for two preganancies and one delivery (I’ve not had the second baby yet). She definitely knows her stuff, and doesn’t miss anything healthwise. So you can be assured all your questions will be answered, and there won’t be anything she hasn’t handled before.

Her bedside manner is very businesslike, though, and my visits usually lasted maybe 2 minutes, if I saw her (I usually saw a nurse practitioner). I felt like she didn’t even know my name during the first pregnancy. As for the first delivery, she rushed in at the last minute on her way to one of her kid’s school events, delivered the baby, and zoomed out.

Kind of off-putting, but there you are. She then appeared at the crack of dawn in the hospital to peer between my legs, then moved on. Very no nonsense. During this second pregnancy, she been a little warmer, which is nice. I think she has so many patients, she doesn’t have a spare second to spend with anyone.

Bottom line: if you are fortunate to have an issue-free pregnancy and delivery, you will not develop any sort of relationship with Dr. Green, but if you do have problems, concerns or issues, she will know how to tackle them with complete confidence.

  3. And I'm glad I didn't.

I had a terrible experience with Dr. Laurie Green. I had come into her office while having a miscarriage and, as the nurse approached the room, I heard Dr. Green tell the nurse to tell me that she wasn’t there. This was my first pregnancy, and I was devastated – and hearing my doctor tell her nurse to tell me she wasn’t in the office was, um, not helpful.

So the nurse gave me a little pill – much better than a D & C they said – and sent us home. Where I proceeded to, well, go into labor. Like lying-on-the-ground-vomiting-from-the-pain-labor. My husband completely freaked out, called Dr. Green’s office, and they just told us to go to the CPMC emergency room. The nurses took good care of me and kind of rolled their eyes when they’d heard that Laurie Green was my doctor. They said, “No one in her office told to expect to go into labor when you took the pill?” Uh, no.

When I called Dr. Green afterward, I just flat out told her that I’d heard her tell her nurse to tell me she wasn’t in the office, and that that really wasn’t the kind of support I was looking for in a doctor –

particularly at such a painful time – and that I should have been told – by her or someone else – what to expect when I took the pill, to which she responded in put-out kind of way that her mother had passed away and she was dealing with trying to get her stuff out of her mother’s house out of town….and I just sat there thinking, wow, this might be the most unprofessional conversation I’ve ever had with a physician.

Frankly, I was thankful to have had this experience BEFORE actually having a baby, because I knew FOR SURE that there was no way I could put my safety – and that of my baby’s – again in Dr. Green’s hands. And I’m glad I didn’t.

  4. CPMC should be ashamed of itself.

I will never forgive this woman for her lack of care, her apathy towards her patients and her inflated ego. She ruined my birthing experience and I am only now hearing how many other women feel the same way I do.

I’d rather have a mechanic deliver my baby. This “doctor” is all hype and no follow through. Do yourself a favor and pick another doctor, ANY other doctor. CPMC should be ashamed of itself.

  5. Maybe you can help them abort their babies if they turn out to be girls.

Laurie you should change your last name from Green to Greed. you are as crooked as a tree branch. You should resign and work for Monsanto.

You’ve betrayed your fellow Americans and aided a Bio-Chem giant (who told us DDT and Agent-Orange were safe) and went up against people who want the right to opt out of being their science experiments.

Move to China were they don’t get the right to vote, you’d love it. Maybe you can help them abort their babies if they turn out to be girls.
