Thomas J Fannon & Sons

Apparently it's a flat fee they keep secret until they send you the bill.

I’m not one to complain, but people should beware of this company lest they be caught off guard by a $150 charge.

I had been planning to call a heating/AC company to look at a wall unit in my sunroom that didn’t seem to be working correctly. Woke up one morning and saw TJ Fannon and Sons at my neighbors house. So I called their office and asked if they could stop over at my house when their crew was finished at my neighbors. They said they could, and I appreciated their flexibility.

The two technicians came over and within about 10 minutes determined that the only possible remedy for my wall unit was to completely replace it. They said they could give me an estimate when they got back to their office later that afternoon.

The two techs seemed to hang around for about 15 more minutes, and I couldn’t figure out why. Our conversation seemed to be covering the same ground over and over. The AC unit needed to be replaced, I got it.

Finally they left, and a few days later I got a bill in the mail for $150. While I certainly expected to pay for the techs’ time, this was pretty steep, and no one had mentioned this flat fee per visit when I called the office. The techs didn’t mention it either. But now I understand why they loitered at my house for so long — they wanted me to feel like I got my money’s worth.

Well, I don’t. They were already right next door, and all they did was look at my unit and tell me they couldn’t fix it and I could replace it if I wanted to. They could have been in and out in less than 10 minutes, but instead were at my house for around 25 minutes.

When I called the office and politely asked if my bill could be reduced, they refused, saying $150 was a flat fee per visit, as long as the visit was less than an hour long.

Apparently it’s a flat fee they keep secret until they send you the bill.

  1. Thomas J Fannon & Sons Bad Service.

2. The duct work was poorly done according to my new heating and air conditioning maintainer.

The prior owners of a home I recently purchased had T.J. Fannon install a new heating and air conditioning system in the attic a while ago in a home that is now 60 years old. The duct work was poorly done according to my new heating and air conditioning maintainer.

The connections between air handler and the sheet metal duct work were not sealed with duct tape, only the insulation was taped, allowing the escape of cooled and heated air into the unconditioned attic. A number of the straight runs of flexible duct were much too long adding curves in the run which reduce the efficiency of the air flow.

A number of runs for flexible supply ducts have tight 135 degree or tighter turns that reduce air flow. One of the major supply ducts supplies only 2/3 of the air flow necessary to supply ducts for two levels of the house.

  3. so I plan to use TJ for any future issues.

I used TJ Fannon & Sons to replace a hot water heater. I called a dozen different companies in the Alexandria area and TJ easily offered the best price. Some companies quoted me twice as much to replace the heater!

Not only that, they were very polite and responsive. They billed me directly so my tenants didn’t have to pay anything upfront. I’ve had very bad experiences with other companies (Stay away from John C. Flood!), so I plan to use TJ for any future issues.

  4. I've used them twice now, and they're simply outstanding.

I’ve used them twice now, and they’re simply outstanding. Ernie said it’s like service you read about in books or heard about from mom and dad, and I’ll expand on that. It’s a small business, family run, with skilled people who really know what they’re doing. On our first call, our furnace broke last year during the first (December 2009) installment of Snowmaggeddon in DC.

Everyone knew a storm was coming and they were swamped, but they snuck us in and fixed our heater prior to that first 20″ snowfall. The tech came out, diagnosed a broken starter motor, and had to order a part. He had to leave and come back 2 hours later, but we got our heater fixed and didn’t have to endure the next week without heat. It would’ve been a long one, work was closed all week and the city shut down.

They came back out recently (Nov 2010) when the heater died. I wondered what had happened because they’d just come out last year. Turns out, we had a bird fly into our furnace chimney and well.. it wasn’t pretty. After a clean up job and a few new parts, the technician had us rolling.
