I worked with Joseph Tuttle, an agent at Cooper and Cooper, to rent an apartment in NYC. He rented me an apartment that did not have a valid Certificate of Occupancy and therefore was not legally suitable to be rented. The landlord (Hubb NYC) knew that the apartment was illegitimate, though they rented it to me nonetheless.
Cooper and Cooper was the exclusive broker for the building, and thus also knew that the apartment was illegitimate.I ended up hiring a lawyer to break the lease (which was not difficult because the apartment was so obviously against the law).
