My husband received a call from a company asking for my maiden name. He refused to provide any detail to my husband and asked my contact details saying that it was very urgent. My husband noted his details and gave it to me. I called the given number and the person on the other line gave me the most shocking news. He said that I owed $800 in debt. I had two options. Either I settle that debt, or I could dispute in the court.
The matter of the fact was I do not even remember any debt of such kind. It was against some household credit. The person on the line informed me that they tried many times to reach me but could not find any lead. He also told me that he was calling from a litigation firm and they were preparing to file against me for not paying my debt on time.
I asked for more information. I asked if he could provide me an exact date when the account was opened or when the account went to the collection while trying to reach me. But, the person was clueless. He told me about a car that I was driving that time and also provided me information about some relatives whom I mentioned as references to my account when I opened it.
That was the time when I felt dubious for the first time. I could have never given those names as references in any circumstances. I asked for a document with all the details of the debt and the link for paying my settlement amount. To this, the person told me that they do not accept online payment at the moment.
After few days, I received few documents from a docusign company. I called the same number back and the person I talked the other day received the call. I asked for my account number and more details. He could not provide me any information that day as well. The document also did not have proper information. He then referred me to the Capital one Financial Corporation who according to him acquired the household debt. I spoke to two persons from that company and was assured that no debt of such kind was ever acquired.
Now, I received a mail from the person from Capital one with a different amount for debt settlement. The document has the information about the company with which I had my account with. So, I called them directly and the lady told me that the account opening date and the date when the payment was stopped. She did not give the account number information which was fishy. When I asked for more, she got irritated and asked to pay the debt or bear the consequences.
I am not going to make any payment until capital one tells me the exact account details. I know I do not owe any debt and I am ready to go to the court if these scammers wish.
