University Federal Credit Union ...

Fraudulent Charges

I have been banking with University of Utah Federal Credit Union for years, just basic savings and checking.

The reason they get 1 star (I would put zero stars if it let me) is because of their terrible fraud protection, or actually their lack of fraud protection.

On two separate occasions I have had fraudulent charges made to my account.

The first time it was around $200. I had to dispute the charges, and wait for 10 business days for the funds to be replaced.

Most banks replace the funds right away, but not these guys…they make YOU pay for criminal activity on YOUR card.

Not only did I have to wait 10 business days, I was also told on a number of occasions that they can’t guarantee that the money will be replaced at all.

The money was eventually replaced. On to the next.

I signed up to get alerts on my phone alerting me of fraudulent activity on my account.

I get an alert on my phone, and a message from their fraud center letting me know about suspicious activity on my account, I respond right away to confirm the charge in question was in fact fraudulent.

Even though I was very prompt in confirming the fraudulent charge, a second fraudulent charge was still able to be made on my account right after, totally around $600.

The two charges were “holding” in my checking account, which I thought was a good thing, meaning they hadn’t gone through yet because I had caught it in time.

Nope, not the case. In fact, I wasn’t allowed to officially dispute the fraudulent charges, which I confirmed were fraudulent charges before they even went through, until they went through! I had to wait until my account was fully charged before I could dispute the fraudulent charges, then file a police report, and then wait 10 business days to get the money back.

I am a full-time student, and this happened at the 1st of the month…when rent is due, but my rent money went to a crook and the companies he used stolen money to buy things from.

A bank or another credit union would have replaced the funds right away, and then paid themselves back once the charges were officially reversed, putting the customer first.

The customer who is trusting them with their money.

When I contacted the U of U credit Union about all of this…they told me to sign up for fraud alerts, so that I could avoid this in the future.

I told them, again, that I was signed up for fraud alerts…and this is what it got me…fraud, from a crook and a credit union.

  1. English is second language.

English is second language. Most of the employees speak Spanish so it is easy for me to use branch.

  2. I will NEVER work with this credit union again!

TERRIBLE to go through of commercial loan. They have fraudulent behaviors and don’t return phone calls. They don’t believe in updating you when changes are being made.

The WORST experience I have every had. We bank at multiple bank for other businesses we own and personal accounts. I will NEVER work with this credit union again!

  3. Bill pay is absolutely unreliable for mailed checks.

Bill pay is absolutely unreliable for mailed checks. They arrive on time for electronic payments, but I have tried to pay utilities and rent by their bill pay system with mailed check and it arrived several days later than promised every single time.

  4. Not Good Service

    Incompetent and nonexistent customer service.

  5. If the best banking option is to use the USPS, it's time to find a new bank.

I’ve been a happy customer for the past decade, but recently have run into some significant problems that are compelling me to go shopping for a new bank. I deposited a $2 check using mobile deposit that was then returned (the fault of the check sender, not me). I got hit with a $10 fee for the returned check, which is unfortunate, but I can live with it.

THEN they cut off my ability to use mobile deposit anymore for six months. I live out of state, and this is unacceptable. When I called to speak to someone about it, they were unable to offer any assistance, and told me that my only option would be to snail mail all my checks in.

If the best banking option is to use the USPS, it’s time to find a new bank. The one thing that prevented me from closing them down completely was the fact that I have been VERY happy with their automatic bill pay system for the past several years and have used it to pay most of my bills.

Well, this past week the unrolled a new automatic bill pay system that seems to go back to the dark ages, is incredibly confusing, and removes the one good thing UofUCU had going for them. Sad to say goodbye, but time to find something that actually works with modern banking standards.

  6. These incompetent fools told me what my charge would be on a loan payment so I paid what they told me.

Just keep away from here, other credit unions if you have good credit give better loans at lower rates. These incompetent fools told me what my charge would be on a loan payment so I paid what they told me.

Turns out the the idiot cannot do math so I ended up in the negative on my account. When I paid the next loan installment that took the money from that and turned around because of their mistake and said I was late with my payment.

  7. This is horrible and sad.

This is horrible and sad. I referred some friends last week as they were looking for a credit union to join, but I have completely changed my mind about this credit union and have already warned them. They should be loyal to the members, especially to the employees, like their slogan says, otherwise they shouldn’t even bother on having one.

  8. I wanted to let you know that this company is selfish

I wanted to let you know that this company is selfish, careless and rude. First, my husband gets fired from a job there he loved for not a single valid reason. My husband came home that day, balling his eyes out and when I asked him, he had no idea why he was fired.

I decided to call the office to speak with the manager demanding a reason why, and Mr. Professional decides to hung up on my face when I was being as courteous as I can be.

Then they decide to not re-open his debit card after he paid hundreds of dollars he had to pay and waited almost four hours in the branch. So, I do my part and they won’t do theirs?
