True Value

True Value I would not only recommend

This place is indeed conveniently located. That being said, their price is always on the high side and quality on the low side. I would only recommend here if you need something urgently within a few hours.

  1. Staff not nearly as helpful as they used to be

Staff not nearly as helpful as they used to be. Went in to rent a steam cleaner. “We have some, but not sure if they work. It will take about 30 minutes to figure it out.” Really? So, I went to Home Depot. Trying to support smaller, local businesses when I can, but this makes it hard.

  2. If I hadn't been in such a rush, I would have done exactly that.

I wanted to get a sample of white paint so I could see if it matched the white that was on most of my walls. I wanted to repaint one wall, but I didn’t want to buy a large quantity of paint before making sure it was the right shade of white (I did some research and found out that there are many shades). Anyway, I walk into True Value wanting to get a small sample.

I was directed to the guy behind the paint counter. When I asked if I could get a sample, he literally began asking 100 questions and seemed to want to argue about giving me a sample of white paint. He obviously wanted to sell me a bucket of paint, and no matter how many times I said “I would like a sample,” he responded with some reason for why I needed to get a large quantity of it. I finally said calmly, “If you won’t sell me a sample of white paint, that’s fine, I will go somewhere else.”

After that, another employee came behind the counter and dismissed the employee I had been arguing with. He put together a sample, which I bought, but at that point I just wanted to walk out and go somewhere else. If I hadn’t been in such a rush, I would have done exactly that.

  3. I will never again spend my money at True Value on.

I recently moved to DC from Texas, and I went to True Value on 17th in order to purchase items and get advice for one of the major remodeling projects for my new apartment.

The first 2 times I went to the store, I was assisted by a young woman in the hardware department (the store has a home items department with a separate entrance). She sounded quite confident in the advice she was providing (she said things like “trust me, this is super easy,” and “I’ve done this like a million times”).

The advice she provided on both occasions turned out to be horrible, and nearly ruined my project, in addition to wasting a lot of my money. She never once asked another employee for assistance, despite the fact that there were at least 3 other employees in the store at the time. The last time I went to the store,

I got advice from an older guy (Dwayne), who knew what he was talking about and helped me considerably with the project I had been working on, yet I cannot continue to go to a store where I can trust the advice of only 1 person. I will never again spend my money at True Value on 17th.

  5. Great Customer Service!

Great Customer Service! I had some keys made for a new home. I had previously tried (and failed) to get keys made successfully at several Ace stores in DC. At the recommendation of friends, I gave True Value a shot.

They were friendly and helpful. I had 4 keys made and (admittedly) one of them was a dud. I returned it and asked for the key to be remade. Not only did they remake the key for free– the clerk said he thought the dud key just needed a little buffering– which he did. So now the previously dud key works, and I got a bonus key made for free!

  6. I love this hardware store!

I love this hardware store! I don’t think that I’ve ever gone into this place and not bought something! Its just like home depot except with the convenience of being located right on 17th street! The staff is really nice and helpful, they always try to help you find whatever you’re looking for.

Its also great cause you can have them deliver the bigger things, plus they have a huge inventory of things that you can order from them. But what I really like about this place is that right next door, they have a small door which leads upstairs to the home furnishings store.
