The Back Dorr

It's too bad, because I love buying old furniture.

This is one of the few stores in the area that carry General Finishes Milk Paint, and twice now I’ve tried to purchase the paint from the store and both times the store was closed even though it was advertised as being open. This past occasion, August 15 at 1pm, there was a note on the door saying out for lunch with a phone number; I came back about 40 minutes later and it was still closed. When I called the number on the door I was told by the woman who answered that she would be another 45 minutes. I told her that this was my second trip to this store and both times were closed and that I wouldn’t be back, and that this was no way to run a business if she wanted repeat customers. She then said she wasn’t the owner–go figure. I don’t how much the owner is paying her help, but whatever it is, it’s too much. It’s too bad, because I love buying old furniture and making it look new or repurposing it for something else. Guess I’ll be going to one of the other consignment shops in the area.

  1. I finally found the shop I've been looking for!!

I finally found the shop I’ve been looking for!! The Front Porch has the coolest furniture etc. I found the perfect chest for my sons room and while I was at it I found some vintage fabric to cover my chair.

The shop is totally run by the owners, they do it all. I find the value and quality of the furniture to be a cut above and the prices to be below the competition.

I watched one of the owners, Joanie, painting and we talked about painting furniture. She was very helpful and open with suggestions. I feel like I got a whole workshop just while I was shopping. I can’t wait to take the real class.

  2. I also noticed that the furniture in the store seemed reasonably and competitively priced.

I took the Furniture Painting 101 class and learned the techniques I need to paint, distress, and finish furniture. It consisted of five hours of hands-on training, with ample time to ask questions and take notes all while actually using the paints and waxes on real wood, which I took home at the end of the class.

The instructor, Joni, was demonstrably experienced at this craft and also was an excellent teacher who imparted information easily and clearly. When time permits me to tackle my first project, The Front Door sells the supplies I will need and, perhaps just as importantly, the expert advice on which I will be able to rely. I also noticed that the furniture in the store seemed reasonably and competitively priced.
