Nicholas Mast

Worst experience

Worst experience of my life! I went to Dr. Mast for a hip replacement in April 2017. I selected him as a surgeon because he had been highly recommended by several health-care professionals whose opinions I respected. I chose to do the hip surgery even though I probably could have delayed it for quite a while, as my hip pain was very minimal.

The moment the anesthetic wore off after the surgery I was in excruciating pain, and nothing I was being given helped at all. I discovered that every oral pain medication I was offered had codeine in it, and I cannot take codeine as it makes me incredibly nauseous. Dr. Mast informed me when I saw him 6 weeks post-op, that there were medications they could have given me at the time that did not contain codeine, but apparently the P.A.s never asked him about it. The pain was so bad that I couldn’t get up and do physical therapy the first day after the surgery, though I tried. I had to stay in the hospital for three days as the pain was never managed.

I never saw Dr. Mast in the hospital after the surgery, except for a couple of minutes directly afterwards when he popped in to look at the incision. His P.A.s were supposed to handle everything, and they were woefully unqualified to deal with my situation. At one point, I was in such agony that the floor nurse ordered intravenous morphine. Just as the IV nurse arrived to hook me up, Kari (Dr. Mast’s P.A.) showed up and countermanded the order. I looked at her and said, “Well, give me something.” She looked exceedingly exasperated, and out of her depth and shouted at me, “Just be glad you have a new hip!” What???

Thus began a nightmare of dealing with Dr. Mast’s P.A.’s, who were completely unable to help me gain any relief, and were both dismissive and defensive whenever I spoke to them on the phone, and also gave conflicting advice. I began physical therapy three weeks post op, but after the first session, I found I couldn’t do it. I now know that my muscles were exceedingly inflamed and that is why I couldn’t do it, but I didn’t know that at the time.

I finally saw Dr. Mast six weeks post op, and he wasn’t pleased as I was not as healed as I should be, and said I should do more physical therapy. He said he was going to call the physical therapist. Apparently they never connected.

At 12 weeks post-op I saw Dr. Mast, who informed me that my problem was my muscles were inflamed, and he wanted to give me a prednisone injection. Kari told me I should be doing certain excercises, but when asked Dr. Mast he said I should not do them. Again, confusion & incompetence. And why did Dr. Mast tell me to do aggressive physical therapy when he saw me at six weeks post-op? It just made everything much worse.

Finally I had enough, I had lost all confidence in Dr. Mast and his staff. I found a new doctor. My new doctor is kind and caring. He listens. He makes time. He does not give me conflicting information. Because I had never been given proper pain medication in the hospital my muscles had gone into a flight or fight type of mode and were extremely tense from the trauma of the surgery. That was why my muscles were inflamed. I should not have begun physical therapy when I did, and I should have been monitored by Dr. Mast more closely. And my pain definitely should have been managed in the hospital, but it wasn’t.

I allowed my new doctor to give me the prednisone injection, and unfortunately it didn’t work. There is no infection, and the surgery was done properly, but the bad news is it will take me a least a year to recover because my muscles are so entirely inflamed.

Dr. Mast may be a good technician, but IMO his practice is basically a big a hip replacement factory. He does too many surgeries, then turns his patients over to an incompetent staff, who may be alright if everything goes like clock work, but who cannot handle anything out of the ordinary.

I blame the entire experience, that got completely out of hand, and was completely unnecessary, on the total incompetence of Dr. Mast’s staff, and Dr. Mast’s own lack of attention to his patients post-op.

It has now become abundantly clear to me, based on Dr. Mast’s interaction with me, (ie. none until 6 weeks post-op in his office, despite my great pain and struggle while in hospital), and then his most recent action after I wrote my Dirty Scam review, (ie. cold calling me, not to ask how I was doing or healing, buy rather to ask me to change the review), as well as his recent comment below, that Dr. Mast cares much more about his Dirty Scam reviews, than he does about the actual welfare of his patients.

So while it may have ‘pained’ Dr. Mast to read my review, I’m sure that is nothing compared to the actual physical pain that I am continually experiencing every waking moment to this day, over one year post-op. (Review edited 5/28/2018)

  1. Horrible Doctor and Worse Human Being

Dr. Mast is does not care about his patients and is indifferent to their suffering. Imagine being in the worst pain you have ever been in and your doctor could care less and won’t give you pain medicine. The pain from my hip was so bad that I took my gun out of the nightstand and put it in my mouth and almost pulled the trigger. I complained about how much pain I was in and Dr. Mast becomes red-faced and incredulous, and blew me off. Sure, he was nice at first, but then it was almost like he became a different person. There are a lot of hip surgeons that are rated higher and with much better reviews the patients love. I wish I would have gone to one of them instead. My whole experience with Dr. Mast was a nightmare from start to finish. It was almost like he enjoyed seeing me suffer and did everything he could to keep me in pain as long as he could. I have never had a worse experience with a doctor.
