Administrative Mistakes

I had been very pleased with Dr. Melvyn Bert’s office for years. Recently, the office transitioned from a local SF management team to a much larger conglomerate based out of Orange County. While I was promised that Dr. Bert would still be my eye doctor, I have not seen him in months due to a series of continuing office administrative mistakes.

Three months ago, I had planned to leave my job (which means losing my insurance) and relocate permanently. I called Dr. Bert’s office to make an annual appointment well before my departure (4 weeks prior). I was pleased to learn that while the office staff had changed, I’d still be seeing Dr. Bert, and nothing about my experience would be changing.

The day before my appointment arrived, I called the office to confirm my appointment, only to hear that the official calendar had no record of my appointment. Slightly irritated, I re-scheduled for 2 weeks from then (1 week before I was leaving town). The day before my rescheduled appointment, a cheerful office representative called to confirm my appointment.

Yay! However, the next morning, a different staff member called to say that my appointment needed to be canceled due to “staffing issues.” More frustrated, I explained the timeliness of getting in to see the doctor and rescheduled my appointment a second time, just a few days before moving.

The day before that next appointment, it was again confirmed by a friendly call from the office staff. Yet again, the morning of the appointment, I was called with “sad news” – more “staffing issues” required that I re-schedule my appointment a third time. At this point, I had no more calendar days available to re-schedule and told the staff that I would not be returning to their office – ever.

I’m writing this in the hopes that you schedule your appointments well in advance of when you need to see the doctor (6+ weeks) so that you don’t end up like me without an eye exam and with a useless annual exam benefit on your insurance policies.
