JCPenney Optical

Such Appalling Service

I am very very rarely inclined to leave such a horrendous review about JCPenney Optical because it takes a lot. I reserve such strong reactions for places that really deserve it. I made the mistake of thinking that I would move my business to this place because I live close enough to it and also because I figured that it would be nice to pick up contacts . I did the tests, got a new pair of glasses and got my prescription for both glasses and contacts.

I got my glasses and thought every thing was going fine. I called them asking to order contacts for pick up. They had my file so they had my prescription. Each time, the person who handled my phone call would take down my information but would then tell me they were too busy and promise to call me back and put in my order then. I never heard back. I called once a week for 5 weeks straight. Every single time, the person who responded was super nice and apologetic.

I’ve worked in the service industry in the past so I tried to be very nice. If they weren’t the ones who had dealt me shitty customer service, I wasn’t going to go off. I never did get my contacts ordered. Instead, I got a slip of paper in the mail with a handwritten contact lens prescription a month later. No note was included. I had to order from a different optical place.

Another issue I’ve been having is that my glasses have been slipping down my face. Not a big deal. I should be able to bring them in right? I did order them from JCPenney after all. I believe the whole process should take no more than 10 minutes to make such a slight adjustment. I have been in on four separate occasions on a trip to the mall.

Twice there was no one there and no signs anywhere as to where anyone was (nothing to note that they will be back in 30 minutes or whatever) and the other two times I was greeted with ridiculous customer service (or lack thereof). The first time I went, there were two employees there and one said they would get to me in a sec. I proceeded to wait for 15 minutes before I finally left. One of them tended to some paper work and another one followed another customer around who was just quietly picking frame.

In the other instance they actually had some there, the guy eyed me and my glasses in my hands and rolled his eyes at me. I had not opened my mouth or said a word. I figured he couldn’t possibly have done that on purpose so I just stood there waiting for my turn (as he was with a customer at that time) or for him to say something like “I’ll be with you in just a sec” or “Can you please come back in 5 minutes? I can help you then.” I stood for another 5 minutes waiting for him to find a good time to break from his current customer. He never made time.

I tried to do the polite thing of saying “hi, excuse me?” which I was going to follow with, “Is there a better time for me to come back? I just wanted to get my glasses that I got from here adjusted.” You know what he did? He just spoke louder over my voice as if trying not to hear me. Even the customer he was with looked at me apologetically. I was shocked by this behavior. I had been patient. Are you freaking kidding me?

I liked the eye doctor who I saw for my eye exam whose name I unfortunately cannot remember. I suppose that’s what the mandatory 1 (rather than 0) star is for. Otherwise, their antiquated process (they had no records of me having called them to place an order for contacts) and lack of customer service will forever have me steering people away from here.

I kept trying to give them chances and to have patience but I wasted too much time. I happen to like some of the items and some of the services they have at JCPenney. Unfortunately, this kind of customer service is symptomatic of why the company is failing. It makes me want to not even go anywhere else in the store for fear of having to deal with such appalling service.Never again. Don’t waste your time.

  1. I went there for an exam and to get glasses I wanted one for distance and one to read. After 3 three weeks they were in so I went and to pick them up. Tried them and I couldn’t see anything out of the. The told me your eyes have to get used to the I said I can see better with out them. They said let’s work with you. I found out a week later the girl that put in the order put both pairs in for reading glasses not a pair of distance glasses. Once again three weeks later I went to pick them up. And still couldn’t see out of them. Now the answer was who made them put the lenses in the wrong side. Again I go to pick them up and still can’t see out of them and wanted my money back and they tell me let’s have another doctor do an exam stupid me I agree. I went to see Him he said I have cataracts in both eyes. The first doctor told me I have nothing wrong just just it’s been years since your exam. I went to Wheaton clinic while waiting JCPenney to get my eyeglasses done. Called again to try to cancel. The girl that I talked to said her supervisor was under the weather and would get back to me on Friday. She never called so I called before the office would close and the person that answered asked me my name and reason I was calling to talk to her I told her I could hear her Walk up and tell her supervisor who I was and the answer was she would call me in 5 minutes. Yes she did call me but could not refund me any money because of the return policy.

  2. Lost a lense

I bought 2 pairs of glasses last year from JC Penny Optical/Pembroke Pines, FL
This week I lost a lense to one pair of glasses and went to get a new lense but keep same fromes because they are still in excellent conditiion.JC Penny Optical wanted to charge me $120.00 for one lense because it was progressive , that is what I was told.I refused and asked to speak to manager which was not there and had to talk to her on the phone. She was very rude and said my warrenty was up and I had to pay or get new glasses. I believe that is not right. If you loose a lense or it falls out you should be able to get a lense without paying over 100.00 for one lense I ended up paying $89.00 for one lense, because , thwy had to make a whole new pair of glasses , but with the same frame that I had , because if I wanted the same frame it was discontinued. that is what I was told. I am very mad and disgusted by this and hope I can get some help with this matter.

  3. Maria was HORRIBLE!

Although I don’t typically leave reviews, I feel compelled to share my recent experience at the Joliet Mall JC Penney Optical. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with the service I received from one employee. I feel it’s essential to speak up in the hopes that it may prevent someone else from having a similar experience.

During my first visit, I had the misfortune of dealing with Maria, who seemed inexperienced and took an excessively long time to enter my information into the computer. Unfortunately, things only got worse during my most recent visit with my daughter on April 22nd, 2023, when we went to pick out two pairs of glasses as part of the advertised “two pairs for $69” special.

We sat for an hour and a half while Maria struggled to enter everything into the computer, and when the total came out to $200, I asked where the two for $60 pricing was. Maria responded with frustration, stating that she didn’t know and that was just what her computer had calculated. However, the breakdown on my receipt was unclear, and when I asked for more information, Maria began to yell at me and even turned her computer around to prove her point.

To add insult to injury, Maria also refused to balance my prescription correctly, claiming that I only needed one lens with a script and nothing in the other. I knew this was incorrect, as it had been done correctly during my previous visit, but Maria continued to argue with me until I requested to speak with a manager. Even then, she attempted to undermine me by telling her manager that I was never satisfied, even though the issue was with her service, not my satisfaction. Melissa, the manager, eventually confirmed that my prescription needed to be balanced but still could not explain the high price Maria had charged me.

Throughout this ordeal, Maria continued to yell at me and my daughter, making the experience incredibly uncomfortable and stressful. It even took her four attempts to ring up my order correctly, and when she finally did, the receipt showed a single item for $139, which was not what I had agreed to. When I pointed this out, Maria continued to argue with me and even accused me of stealing the frames I had picked out. Although she eventually found them, she never apologized for her unfounded accusation.

Thankfully, two other managers, Carol and Coleen, stepped in and refunded my card for the purchase. While they were both superb, Maria’s behavior had already left me with hives and an overwhelming upset. Although Melissa called me the next day to apologize, she didn’t take concrete action to address the situation. At this point, I have no desire to ever return to this store again.

  4. Quality Is Notratious

Went in to buy two pairs of glasses one pair for everyday use and a pair of sunglasses. The lady was very nice measured me for correct height and stuff like that. I picked out both pairs of eye frames I liked was told both pairs of glasses would take 2 weeks OK 3 weeks later they are now in. One lady called and told me hey I see where you live I will take them to the closer location for you so you do not have to drive so far. Thank you so much I felt this was so nice of her to do this for me. I go to pick up the glasses my sunglasses I see double of everything they cannot believe I have double vision with the sunglasses on. Look I have been wearing glasses for years I never had this problem they said they will send them back not sure why they are like this. My other glasses I told them when I read fine print it is very blurry oh you are just getting used to the glasses again I have been wearing glasses for years never had this problem. Asked if I would wear them and see if I get used to them. Driving into work the next morning me dashboard is a blur the highway signs are a blur taking these glasses back tomorrow. I will take my prescription with me and see what they can do for me not having a lot of warms and fuzzies so far this is my 1st experience with JC Penney optical.

  5. BUYER BEWARE

BUYER BEWARE! JcPenny Optical may say it has a money back guarantee BUT, this does not count the eye exam. JcPenny has Independent Contractors who do the exams. If they prescribe you a incorrect prescription they DO NOT have to refund the exam price. Even if they are incompetent! I used Beavercreek, Ohio location
