Equinox Sports Club San Francisco

Arrogance in the leadership of this gym

This gym has gone through constant renovations, and the membership price keeps increasing. They have gone through multiple renovations of certain parts of the gym, and see no shame in blowing through money for this and passing it on to members.

Secondarily, long time staff, that has worked at that gym for over a decade have been removed from the gym as part of the renovation. There is a hip young look to the gym, and as stated by other Dirty Scam reviews, it is not a gym that caters to participants of any age group.

Finally, you will find an arrogance in the leadership of this gym, that I have learned rolls all the way up to the top of the corporate organization. I left this gym in an unfortunate way. The classes aren’t bad, the location is perfect, but the membership fee’s support something toxic.

  1. DO NOT join this club.

Listen to me now, but hear me later. DO NOT join this club. There are more people in the gym than pieces of equipment to workout on. It’s not worth the price of $200+ a month when you are getting a poor quality workout due to over capacity.

  2. the membership fee's support something toxic.

  3. Maybe they were used mainly to open other Equinox locations.

In last few days, I received a message from Equinox COO that begins by thanking me for being a loyal member, but then goes down hill from there. After the first line thanking members, there is a long spiel about programming and digital content, followed by news of two new Equinox locations that opened in NY and CA.

Then, in the last few lines, it arrives. There is an announcement of a $5 monthly membership rate increase. The message closes with brief thanks for being a passionate and committed member. If only, I could say Equinox was as committed and passionate about managing the Sports Club LA location.

  4. Continuing my one star review until the issues are corrected.

Updated: I received a survey from Equinox via email and filled it out honestly. Machines at this location remain broken, the showers are disgusting, lights are falling out of the ceiling, weight machines have worn cables.

The response from management was that they “agree that much of the club’s equipment is old, and that the facility itself is in need of some work.” Really? Then why did you JUST JACK UP THE PRICE OF MEMBERSHIPS for a facility that you know is old and falling apart?

There really is no excuse for the way this place is being managed, other than simple greed. After the holidays, I’ll be finding a better gym.

  5. This space was another gym to begin with and the layout and finishes doesn't reflect Equinox standards.

You finally find one that seems to work only to find out that it resets itself every 5 minutes and you have to input all your information again. A number of machines are simply unusable because the touchpad doesn’t work so you can’t input information or even get it to start.

Some machines are rusting apart and no one seems to care that it’s dangerous. There are a number of weight machines that don’t work anymore. Weights get stuck at the top (dangerous) or the gears and weights scrape against the machine itself preventing you from completing the full motion.

  6. The corporate giant ruined an otherwise amazing place that used to be a true showpiece.

This place has gone so far downhill since Equinox took over, what a freaking dump. Urine on the floors, crowded weight areas, underpaid and underqualified meatheaded staff… Total waste of money. The corporate giant ruined an otherwise amazing place that used to be a true showpiece.

  7. I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.

I’ve been a member of this club almost since it opened (as Club LA). What a great place it use to be! Absolutely the best in SF and worth every cent of the expensive monthly fees.

Unfortunately the club was acquired by Equinox last year (a down-market outfit). The result has been akin to what you would expect if Burger King acquired The French Laundry: a total freaking disaster, with a side order of fries to go.

  8. Who needs this crap

It’s so unfortunate how quickly the place has gone downhill since Equinox had bought out SCLA. Totally disgusting now. Honestly, the only reason I’m staying is because the pool is still great. If they make the changes I’ve heard about, I’m outta there. Who needs this crap?

  9. ALL of which have been missed.

I’ve been a member of the Market Street location since it first opened as SportsClub LA, and since Equinox acquired the property it has been all downhill. While raising ALL the prices for both membership and training, they have replaced competent, trained staff with employees who clearly don’t know the first thing about customer service.

In addition, their painfully slow (as in “we won’t pay the contractor to work overtime so it doesn’t inconvenience our members”) renovation projects have randomly restricted access to basic amenities, such as showers, lockers and wash areas.

Honestly, providing Kiehl’s prodcuts to your memberships is NOT an offset to the inconvenience of your poorly managed site upgrades. Hire a professional construction project manager so you can actually manage and complete these improvements within the promised deadlines, ALL of which have been missed.

  10. the locker room was so uninviting I didn't want to stay longer than needed.

During my visit the (huge) locker room smelled like feet and burnt hair and there were multiple women walking around chatting on their phones. The louder music was not relaxing pre or post-spa treatment. I could not comment on the cleanliness of the showers or bathrooms, the locker room was so uninviting I didn’t want to stay longer than needed.

The ladies lounge is tiny and has a sofa and two small chairs. It feels like an afterthought. You must descend two flights of stairs to reach the spa cabins. They were clean and pleasant. Dimly lit with soothing music.

  11. Pricey but SO worth it.

Pricey but SO worth it. This place is massive! 3 floors, 25k square feet with a huge Olympic sized pool. The locker rooms are bigger than most peoples homes and super clean. It’s like going to a country club every time I work out. Fab!

  12. So it is the best choice as for the purpose such me.

If I want to tell some thing about this place I think I should tell about their executive membership and at the time the stuff of this place so friendly and at the time also the professional . The equipment and the locker room of the place is the fantastic one to me.
