Dr. Lesley Meister

Very Unprofessional

Not a good experience. As a doula, I see a lot of births all over the city, and this one left me feeling really sad.

Dr. Lesley Meister Meister told my client (who was laboring naturally, other than being on pitocin), that – because she was very dilated but baby wasn’t far enough down the birth canal – a C-section was very likely.

This is not true. Despite the fact that my client’s birth plan clearly stated that she was trying for an unmedicated delivery, Dr Meister then recommended that my client get an epidural, which she inferred was her only hope of giving birth vaginally.

Thankfully, my client was a total champion, and proved her wrong – after only a little more laboring she was ready to push.

After only 50 minutes of pushing, Dr Meister then told my client that she would need an episiotomy (where the OB cuts through the perineum), because “some vaginas just aren’t big enough”.

The standard length of pushing for a first time mom is two hours, so this information was not accurate at all.

Episiotomies should only be performed in emergency situations, when baby’s health is at risk, and needs to come out promptly.

This was not the case, the heart rate monitor indicated that baby was completely content and healthy. She then performed the episiotomy, without informed consent.

She was also very insensitive, making comments throughout the labor that were very unprofessional.

The one that sticks out most in my mind was after the placenta had been delivered, and there was a lot of blood.

She turned to a nurse, and said: “I need you because it looks like a crime scene down here”, which freaked out my client, and forced me and dad to calm her down.
