Dr. Kjersti Kirkeby MD

I Cannot Make An Appointment

I hang up after calling Dr. Kjersti Kireby’s office. In 30 years of living in S.F., I’ve never had a conversation like this with medical professionals.

It was amazing. I don’t know whether Dr. Kirkeby wanted to ruin her practice or if she didn’t understand what her receptionist was saying.

My internist of the past 20+ years is at CPMC in Calif. I called because I had Hypothyroidism. I just received my blood test results back, giving me the stats.

He suggested that I see an endocrinologist. Dr. Kirkeby was one name he gave me.

She is young and will take new patients. I called the office to schedule an appointment.

I was told that I could not make an appointment until I faxed my medical records to “review.”

I gave the name of the doctor who referred me. Could he not send me the records? No. Maybe.

Dr. Kirkeby will be on vacation until August 1. OK, can we schedule an appointment? Yes, but I need to send you insurance information and other details.

I stated that I was just on the phone with the doctor’s office yesterday and did not expect anything similar.

That’s it. I stated that if August is the first available appointment, I could make an appointment now and send the information later. We KNOW that I have Hypothyroidism.

I have the blood test results and my doctor’s. I KNOW I must see an Endocrinologist and not another doctor.

It’s not unreasonable to have an appointment. Her first opening will be in September.

You said August, I thought. Well, no, I’m looking. Nothing until September.

OK, then we have ample time to review the records. No problem, let’s schedule the appointment.

Well — that’s not how we do things. She would have to cancel the appointment if she looked at your records after we had made it.

Finally, I said, “Look, I was very interested in Dr. Kirkeby.

But I have never had a conversation like that with a doctor’s office. I will make an appointment, thank you.”

I HOPED that Dr. Kirkeby rethinks this policy if it is indeed her office policy.

If it isn’t, she will at least hire someone who can help prospective patients avoid being shoved into cold stone walls.
