Dr. Gary Apter

Not Only Unprofessional But Hurtful

lf I could rate this doctor with a negative star I would. I had previously seen Dr. Gary Apter twice before I simply requested he sign a DMV form so I could obtain a DMV disabled parking permit.

I dropped off the form days before I said I would like to pick it up. I am 62 years old, have had Multiple Sclerosis most of my adult life, have been having much difficulties getting on and off the SF buses, balance, and walking the hills of SF.

I realized it was time, for the first time, I applied for this parking permit.

Previously Kaiser sent Dr Apter all my medical records which he decided not to look at (?), and I had also included with the DMV form a typed Kaiser letterhead letter, signed by my previous Kaiser doctor, stating my conditions; MS and Type I Diabetes.

I should have know right then and there that this doctor was highly questionable when he refused to look at my past records.

When I came into his office both the doctor and his unfriendly office assistant started to question me.

His belligerent office lady even shut the glass sliding door shut in my face stating that the doctor didn’t want to sign it.

What? Why? I simply slid open the door, stating I would take a seat in the waiting room until he signed it.

Her behavior with me was insulting- like I was lying about my condition. She started to question me about my eyes, etc. Again…?

After some time, this doctor eventually did sign the form but only gave me a 30 day permit.

MS is not a temporary disability. He obviously was angry because when I took the form into the DMV, they refused it because he had made a mess of it.

I have found Dr Apter, not only unprofessional but hurtful, and can only hope he revisits his Hippocratic oath.

  1. He is NOT a hand holder, which is ok for me, but others might be put off by him.

This is a difficult review for me to complete. I was referred to Dr. Apter by several friends (doctors, no less) who just raved about him. Supposedly really super if you have some sort of dread disease or a puzzling condition that requires sleuthing and extra smarts.

I don’t have any of these maladies, thank goodness, and while I believe that he is indeed very intelligent (probably genius material), I find him scattered and distracted. Moreover, despite being his patient for over 8 years, he hardly knows me or remembers my particular health concerns.

He is NOT a hand holder, which is ok for me, but others might be put off by him. Kay (his PA) fills that role, and she is wonderful, which is the one reason that I stay with Apter.

  2. due to her bitchy attitude i am looking for a new doctor as i can no longer stand the situation.

i have been a patient of dr. apter for years and while he is knowledgeable as a pcp i find a certain member of his office staff to be very unprofessional and nasty. every time i have to deal with this woman i get very upset and angry,
due to her bitchy attitude i am looking for a new doctor as i can no longer stand the situation.

  3. Apter clearly is not worthy of his medical degree, is lazy and I strongly advise that no one use the service of Dr. Apter .

Dr Apter and his staff are the worst medical health care providers I have ever seen. I strongly advise not going to Dr Gary Apter. Dr Apter is very busy, so he employ es a PA/C (Kruger ) to assist him. My wife went to Apter to investigate scalp pain after returning from Belize. Dr Apter passed my wife to Kruger ,PA/C,who diagnosed my wife as having shingles.

This decision was made without ordering a blood test or any other medical diagnosis.Kruger prescribed a strong medication and then told my wife to come back in 5 weeks. The pain increased, Kruger, refused to re-examine her until the 5 weeks were up. Finally after 2 weeks of great pain, my wife demanded to been seen again, and only at this time did Apter see her. The “shingles” diagnosis was changed by Apter to a sever scalp infection and he referred my wife to a dermatologist who correctly determined the problem to be a parasite contracted from our Jungle tour.

Nothing to do with shingles. How can a competent medical person confuse a virus with a parasite ! California law requires that all PAs be supervised by the employing doctor, in this case Dr. Apter. Apter did not supervise Kruger, allowing this low level medical PA to misdiagnose and prescibe debilitating drugs. Apter clearly is not worthy of his medical degree, is lazy and I strongly advise that no one use the service of Dr. Apter .

  4. She is a wonderful lady and seems to care, but if you are very sensitive to your paps like I am then she is NOT for you.

BLAH…I used to like going here. Until it was time for my yearly pap! Yikes….I felt like I was being examined by a prison guard. It was rough and painful and I was bleeding afterward for several days. And that was from the NP, Kay Kulger. She is a wonderful lady and seems to care, but if you are very sensitive to your paps like I am then she is NOT for you.

  5. I hate giving bad reviews, but I feel it is my duty to tell my story so this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Dr Apter was OK as long as I was healthy and just needed a yearly checkup. When I went for my last physical, I complained of debilitating fatiquue, 10 pound weight gain and also the lab results showed high cholesterol.

He told me to exercise and to watch my diet (hard to exercise when one is suffering from severe fatique!, plus, my diet is healthy already).
I had a hunch something was wrong with my thyroid, and mentioned it; however, he ignored me and said my TSH was still in the normal range (it was barely within range, and increased significantly from a year prior).

I even called again a day later and told him the TSH has different cut-off’s in other countries, and could he do more thyroid tests because I was so fatiqued i couldn’t function. He refused.

Thank God I have a PPO so that I could see an endocrinologist without referral (which Apter would have never given me). The endo I saw immediately sent me to the lab and I was diagnosed with a severe Thyroid condition and put on medication right away.
