I work for a large tech company and when I signed up for health insurance several months ago, I signed up for Dr. Fong Hanlon J listed as my PCP (primary care physician).
Fast forward a couple of months and I pull a muscle in my back running with my dog.
Essentially I’m bed-ridden and cannot move. I called Dr. Fong to make an appointment and leave a call back number.
I get a call back several minutes later saying
‘How did you get this number?’ Dr. Fong rudely asks
‘It’s on the front of my health insurance card and you’re listed as my PCP’
‘We’re not accepting new patients at this time’
‘Ok. I’m not a new patient because I listed you as my PCP when I signed up for comprehensive health insurance’
‘We’re not accepting new patients at this time. Sorry’
‘Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed? I’d really like to see someone and Cigna just told me that I can’t make an appointment to see anyone but my PCP’
‘Sorry we’re not accepting new patients at this time’
Well, I never did manage to make an appointment to see him.
I was appalled by his lack of empathy and not even taking the time to point me in the right direction to sort out the issue.
From this brief interaction I can already infer that he wouldn’t have the characteristics that I would like in a doctor – empathy, patience, care.
