Arkansas Heart Hospital

Worst Experience

My brother had bypass surgery, and his experience at the Arkansas Heart Hospital was not good in many ways.

He got off to a rough start after the surgery and because of pain meds was really difficult – argumentative, etc.

[Not to mention that the week before the surgery he had no idea his heart was ailing, and was in total shock.]

Even though he had had nausea the first day and only clear liquids, his nurse gave him Hydrocodone on an empty stomach with water as a chaser – making him sick.

Then gave a discourse about why men in their 50’s are just babies when it comes to recovering from heart surgery (!).

When we dared to complain, the nurses became alienated and from that point on his stay was miserable – from the nurses to the case managers.

He found out his last night there that they had made notes on his chart about an ‘allergy to hydrocodone

So he got only Tramadol for days – which did not work for his pain at all.

The case manager was to get him into rehab but continually told him he would not qualify, and that she was not able to get anywhere with his insurance company in getting an approval.

She and another case manager continued to indicate to him that the insurance was not going to approve the stay, even after PT finally did their eval stating that he qualified for acute care rehab.

When I finally got through to the insurance pre-certification department, they said that the case manager FAXED the clinical information instead of calling it in, which automatically delays the approval up to 5 days (!).

They said that if the nurse had called it in, the approval could have been granted on the phone! He finally did get a really good nurse his last night there.

She gave him a good pain medicine that worked and helped him rest, and immediately his outlook turned around.

Overall, there was a lot of politics and backstabbing going on, that was not at ALL in the best interest of the patient.

So whatever you do, don’t complain! A “squeaky wheel” gets no oil here, and may not recover. 🙂

  1. I can not express how awesome everyone has been

I can not express how awesome everyone has been, taking care of my husband. Thank you for all you do, above the standard care given.

  2. Bad patient/customer service.

Also shocking was the fact that in the family waiting room there is no restroom. Again, I say — really? When it came time to go, the staff had LOTS of time to get insurance information and have me sign disclosures about various things — including that my husband s cardiologist is an owner of the hospital.

I just wish I had told her to mail me the forms and a slick brochure to explain it all, and we would consider whether or not we wanted to sign them.

  3. Great job Dr.Murphy for having such amazing staff

Great job Dr.Murphy for having such amazing staff

  4. Keep the beat scam.

Keep the beat scam. First I’m told I have problems then after seeing one of their cardiologists I’m told everything is normal. First I’m told my insurance will cover it then I get a bill for several hundred dollars. Just a scam to get money from you and your insurance.

  5. This hospital and the associated owner docs are not my choice for the future.

This review is for the emergency department. We recently took my husband (who has a history of heart problems) to the ER. We were the only people (patient/customer) there. They have a policy of not allowing a family member (in this case, spouse) into the treatment room.

This is the first time I have encountered this policy, but I suppose they have the right to establish their own policy. However, they did not tell us that this is the policy — they shut the door (literally) in my face with no explanation.

The people working behind the glass in the ER (2 to 3 folks at all times) said nothing to me, but a few minutes later called me to the window and unceremoniously shoved a slick brochure into my hand. It was frequently asked questions and answers; one was why family members cannot go with the patient. Really? Staff cannot tell me this policy?

  6. It has been a nightmare from the beginning.

It has been a nightmare from the beginning. They scheduled appointments at two different locations at the same time. It was unclear when the surgery would be done because they kept calling it a test instead.

The day we arrived for the appointment we were still unsure if the surgery would be done. We had asked several times in the past and it was never answered. While checking in, we finally found out the surgery would be done on that day but they still referred to it as a test.

The surgery was supposed to take place at 1pm but they were five hours late. The procedure was finally over at 7pm and the doctor said we could leave at 10pm… but the nurse didn’t remove the shunts for another two and a half hours. Then it was 12:30am before they were ready to let us go and we live three hours away.

  7. Zero communication anesthesiologist flat out lied to me did not take any precautions my narcolepsy doctor had said.

Absolutely the worst experience of my life two times in a row. Zero communication anesthesiologist flat out lied to me did not take any precautions my narcolepsy doctor had said. I slept walked out of place due to DR. FROSTS stupidity

  8. This was just plain wrong.

The hospital is ok. But what about the TV? Seriously, people are paying thousands of dollars a day laid in a bed 24 hours a day and all they have to watch is the View on basic cable. What happened to customer service? Service is ok but communication could be 10 times better.

My father was being held in a room waiting for surgery not knowing what day that might be. Us children all work for a living and gave instructions to call before he was taken into surgery so that someone could be here with him.

No one called and my father ended up going into surgery alone, not having any family present. Nor did they call once he was out. That was a terrible disappointment not only to us but to my father. I will be issuing a formal complaint to whoever listens. This was just plain wrong.
