Andrea Hyson is a very knowledgeable and competent CPA when it comes to her expertise and technical know-how of the tax system. That said, if you work with Andrea, I think you also have to be open to the possibility of missed deadlines, lack of communication, and late filings.
I believe that this is a fair and reasonable conclusion based on my experiences working with her: she is technically very knowledgable, but you also need to be open to potential, unexpected inconsistency and lack of communication.
After not hearing back from her for several weeks leading up to the April 18, 2016 annual filing deadline, she sent out a mass email on April 15 stating that despite her radio silence, she would indeed be filing by April 18. Come April 18, and there was no word from her until 5 PM in the form of short note that she had completed my return (but did not send it) and would be filing an extension shortly.
After following up with her numerous times in the following two weeks, she finally sent the actual filing for me to look at on May 22. The filing was actually missing some expenses that I had uploaded via her portal (so it was incorrect), and at that point I had already moved on. Basically, imagine if your CPA
just stops communicating with you for a month for much of April to May, save for some short, brief messages about sending you the promised filings in a week or so. That’s what my experience can be summed up as.
As I was very frustrated with both her: 1) lack of timeliness and 2) lack of communication around the delays, I had started working with another CPA to get the filing done. Incidentally, the designer who referred me to Andrea also stopped working with her, stating the delays and lack of responses as the main reasons
why. As taxes are an important part of our bookkeeping process as small businesses, it generated quite a bit of additional anxiety and frustration. She can be great when she’s communicating responsively, as she was in the beginning, but towards the end it was the most unprofessional and surprising experience I’ve ever had with a CPA.
