Iowa Ortho

Ignored For A Week

Don’t believe Iowa Ortho’s generic “we strive for excellent” reviews. The DR spent virtually no time with me. He gave me a shot with no warning of potential side effects.

Which I happened to be one of the lucky ones to experience.

It was extremely worrisome since I didn’t know it could happen.

I understand that he can’t control that I had the side effects, but I was not informed of the possibility.

And I probably should have asked, but I was so taken back by the way he administered the shot and his in and out attitude Also my records have things that simply did not happen and that I was not told in them.

That’s just not right. It’s both visits that have things that didn’t happen in my records so it’s not a one time thing.

I emailed them on their portal. They asked me to call. Since then 2 emails in their portal have gone ignored for a week.

If they cared they would have answered the emails or picked up the phone to see how a patient who is still clearly in pain was doing.

They haven’t. That alone should tell you how much they care.

  1. Great Service

    Great Facility, excellent staff!

  2. They don't care if you get better.

I’ve also had numerous people from my job and elsewhere tell me they had the same exact experience with other doctors from iowa ortho as well. So all I have to say is if you have a choice go somewhere else even if you have to drive 2 hours go somewhere else because your just a pay check to the doctors at iowa ortho. They don’t care if you get better.

  3. Never even glanced at my wrist.

You could tell the second you met the doctor your just a pay check to him. Every appointment he spent no more than 3 minutes in the room with me and the 3 minute appointment was the follow up after my surgery which by the way he didn’t even look at the spot I had surgery.

Then 4 months after the surgery I was still having severe pain so my physical therapist sent him a fax saying they wanted him to take another look and see if there might be another issue.

He said he didn’t have time to look for the fax and I needed to stop going to physical therapy anyway because I was fine and when I looked at him completely dumb founded he said oh well you can go for 2 more weeks if you want. Then sent me on my way. Never even glanced at my wrist. Absolutely pathetic.

  5. Don't know if there is anything I can do about that or not.

I put my trust in Dr. Mark Mathes, and he was totally dishonest in his surgical report. He didn’t want to be held responsible if I were to do something about it, which I wish I would have.

He comes off as a soft spoken kind man, but I’m telling you he just right out lied in my surgical report. That was August of. Don’t know if there is anything I can do about that or not.

  6. It's also interesting that Iowa Ortho has no female doctors.

Dr. Aviles had no interest in helping to heal my shoulder/neck the moment he found out I wasn’t a surgical candidate. He blew me off and treated me as if the pain was in my head. I asked for a second opinion within the same Iowa Ortho clinic and they refused.

I went elsewhere and they reviewed the MRI and found that I did, in fact, have a torn Labrum. After the right course of treatment I am better thanks to Capital Orthopaedics. I would recommend Capital Orthopaedics over Iowa Ortho Clinic any day of the week. It’s also interesting that Iowa Ortho has no female doctors.

  7. I suggest you stay clear of this clinic.

I suggest you stay clear of this clinic. I’m in need of medical treatment due to a chronic disease. After nearly 3 months of “reviewing my records”, they refused to treat me, because “I made too many attempts to contact their office and my case was too complicated”.

I guess that says to others 1) never advocate for your medical needs and 2) if you have a “simple medical issue” this is the place for you, but if you are really ill go elsewhere.

  8. Adequate care. Horrible.

That was his way of helping the insurance company to not have to provide, or pay for, adequate care. Horrible. I’ve contacted an attorney who recommended I file an ethical complaint against him.

He was a robot looking to get paid and made it clear through his actions and his condensing manner that patient care is not his top priority. I think of Dr. Schmidtz and Iowa ortho everyday when my back hurts so bad I can barely function.

  11. Seen Dr. Smith for a Work Injury.

Seen Dr. Smith for a Work Injury. I was sloughed off and not treated and lied to for 4 months before being release. Dr. Smith than told workman’s comp that my pain was my spinal stenosis and was not a injury and would not get better.

Dr. Smith did not even have the nerve to tell me this himself he let the workman’s comp tell rep me. 2 months later my pain went away. So Dr. Smith was completely wrong and he is the perfect Doctor for Workman’s comp insurance companies but the worst doctor for the patient.
