Phone call loan scamThe same day that I got my income tax refund and unemployment benefits were pleasant until a man called me to offer me $5000. However, before we could receive the loan, he said I had to verify myself through his affiliates by buying gift cards from a Wal-Mart.
The three gift cards ended up totaling $1280.70, and I never got the loan. Worse than that, all that money was taken out of my account. +1 (312) 429-0130 was the number that called me.
Interestingly enough, he kept in touch a couple of days after he scammed me, saying that he would try and pay me back.
I believed him at first, but he stopped replying since I imagine he was only looking for more money to get out of me. I had been waiting for that refund for months, and I’m unemployed and a student.
Yes, I do receive a few benefits from the government, but they will end in September. At that point, I will have to get a full-time job as well as attend full-time school.
Also, I have to pay out-of-pocket for part of the school tuition because financial aid didn’t approve my total tuition. Just like everyone else, I also have other bills I have to pay.
Chase told me that they could not dispute this fraud because it was my fault for using my debit card to purchase those gift cards the man offering the loan on the phone told me to buy. That should’ve been a huge red flag right there, but I am poor and in debt, which clouded my judgment.
So since he kept assuring me it was just a verification process, I proceeded to do as he said. Then, of course, he asked for pictures of the codes on the back of the gift cards, so that was the way they could pull off the scam. I should’ve known better, and it’s going to be very hard for me to trust any loan company from here on out.
The bank said not even filing a police report would help. Is there any way I can get my money back? It may not be much money, but to me, it is.
