Dr. Victor Prieto

Spend A Bunch Of Money

Don’t go if your time is at all valuable. I have had 2 appts with Dr. Victor Prieto, both scheduled for morning, so would expect to be seen without much delay but this was NOT the case.

The first appt I waited an hour after the scheduled time before being seen. Have to say I was underwhelmed by the Dr’s demeanor.

When describing my knee anatomy he starts writing on the tissue paper we sit on on the exam table… I offered real paper and he declined.

He gave me the tissue paper after(!) He said there would be 3 reasons to do an MRI – when a dr is clueless, when the patient wants to spend a bunch of money (clearly these are his attempts at humor) or when making a determination for how to treat, Duh!

And when I described pain in the other knee he was quite dismissive.

Got my MRI done and came back for appt #2 for the results.

Again for this appt which was presumably his first one of the day (9:15) the Dr is running way late.

After 40 minutes I ask for status and the office person said he is in surgery and it is running late.

15 min later I hear another office person on phone saying his surgery had been canceled (so then he should be running ahead of schedule, right?) and he is on his way.

A third office person tells me he was in surgery, then when clarified there was no surgery, says, well he has other clinics, we are not his only office… to which I say but then he should not be double or triple booked.

They then squeeze someone in ahead of me and at this point it has been over an hour and I say I need to leave and get to a meeting.

When asked do I want to reschedule? Um, that would be a NO.

If Dr Prieto and his scheduling team have so little respect for their patients time, in addition to his very odd chairside manner, I’d honestly not let this guy near me for surgery.

The other reviews sounded so promising, but no doctor is worth much if you can’t see him in a reasonable time period of your appt, when no emergencies happened either time.

Thankfully there are many great ortho’s in SF so I’ll be seeing one of them.

  1. I like him. I like him a lot.

Not only amazing Dr, but also just a great guy. I have a sports-related injury that has been misdiagnosed by my standard Dr. for months. I visited Dr. Preitor and he understood immediately that my issues were not only painful but also causing lifestyle issues (i.e. no sports or activities for many months) – he jumped up and got on the ball – scans, consultations etc.

Hell, he spent almost 30 minutes carefully going through my CT scan at one point and said, “Isn’t this fun” … I like him. I like him a lot. If he wasn’t a specialist for hips and knees, I would go to him for flu symptoms… he rocks! Oh and Joelle – his assistant – she rocks – she spent extra time making sure I could get in to see other specialists immediately. Awesome.

  2. This Doctor is amazing!

This Doctor is amazing! I needed a rotator cuff surgery, and after doing a bit of research I was scared to death to have it done… all I could get out of the research was that there was going to be TONS of pain. Well, with Dr. Prieto and his wonderful sidekick Don Kemp, I now have a fully functioning shoulder…and no pain!

The surgery was outpatient (yes!), and the pain was manageable (wonderful little pills) and when I talked about my experience with the surgery, others who had had the same surgery with other surgeons were deeply envious of my easy experience.

Both Dr. Prieto and Don Kemp had amazingly easy bedside manners, explained everything and seemed very interested in everything I needed to have done. Wonderful experience.

  3. Never Again

Dr. Prieto was the essence of what a person would want in an orthopedic surgeon in an emergency situation like we encountered. My wife had slipped and fallen on a rain soaked wooden walkway in SF.

She fell with full force on her unprotected elbow without any means of bracing or slowing for the impact. She shattered the joint, rendering much of the bone and other tissue to a pulverized powder.

The EMT’s took care of her, controlled her pain, and reached out to me to advise their destination as St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, where I met her within the hour. Within very few moments, we were joined by the kind, jovial, yet realistic Doctor, who just plainly spelled out the injury, it’s rather serious nature and the prognosis as he felt her case would follow. No sugar coating, no fluff nor smoke and mirrors. Tomorrow morning, 8:30. Surgery. Reconstruct that joint and she would be off for home by noon.

It was actually half past two when we shoved off. Hurt and sad if a bit unhappy, as the job interview went well yesterday. Job offered and accepted just 15 minutes before that slip and fall. I was charged with calling her new and soon to be ex boss to suggest my wife wouldn’t be able to take the job, but thanks for the opportunity!

  4. He was very arrogant.

My rating for Victor Prieto is negative 5 stars. Beware of this doctor. He gives you the run around just to collect insurance money. He’s not here to treat you nor able to treat you.

  5. I'm furious with this callous, self-centered Dr., & would recommend him to no one!

I am a retired librarian; most of your glowingly positive reviews of Dr. Prieto seemed to have been written by “jocks”.Hmm. I had a horrible experience with this Dr., & would never see him or go to St. Francis Hospital again. Here’s my story: I dislocated my artificial hip while staying at a hotel in SF.

It was a crazy “fluke”–my foot got caught under the door & I pulled the wrong way, thus dislodging the hip from its socket. In unbelieveable pain, I was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital where a very kind ER Dr. attempted to relocate the hip by using minimal anesthesia (I later learned he had no other options due to Dr. Prieto’s refusal to come in & help me). The ER Dr.

didn’t succeed, & I was then in even more excruciating pain. I found out several interesting facts about Dr. Prieto that night::1.) He refused to come care for me, even though he was the orthopedist on call. 2.) I couldn’t get proper anesthesia for what needed to be done because ERs can’t use Propofil anymore (think MJ).3.) Dr. P. made me wait for 20 interminable hrs. until he decided he was “rested”, despite the fact that he was on-call.

Doesn’t the Hippocratic Oath start w/: “Do no harm?” I am emotionally scarred, & have recently been told by another Dr. that my recovery may be compromised by the length of time I was neglected w/ a hip joint out of the socket-I.e. damage to tissue, lack of blood supply, etc. After Dr. Prieto completed the procedure & I woke up from the anesthesia,

he stopped by to congratulate himself on how well he had corrected my dislocation. I wasn’t impressed–I asked him if he would make his wife, child or a close friend suffer for so long, & he refused to answer me. I’m furious with this callous, self-centered Dr., & would recommend him to no one!
