Dr. Midori Nishimura

Unfortunate Mistake

Big trouble with pediatrician Dr. Midori Nishimura When choosing a pediatrician you not only care how well they smile, how responsive they are with routine visits.

You want a pediatrician has the knowledge can save you from big trouble because you don’t want to take a chance with your precious little one!

Our baby girl was born with a wired head shape. Everyone talked about it.

I repeatedly asked her pediatrician Dr. Nishimura and she repeatedly told me there is no problem with her head.

Finally at 9 month (Dec. 2016) check up I decided to see a PAMF doctor for 2nd opinion.

Right away she referred me to see Neurosurgeon at Stanford.

Turned out, baby girl had prematurely fuzed head bones which requires surgery.

The CT scan confirmed it. By then we had missed the window of opportunity to have a less invasive surgery because those are for baby 6months or less.

Instead baby girl had to have a more invasive, bigger surgery.

Full head skin had to come off, 6 hours full anesthesia, blood transfusion, 5 days in patient… When she was taken away from me to the surgery room, seeing that tiny body disappeared behind the heavy door, I was in tears.

Fast forward… the surgery happened in Match 2017 and went well.

Baby recovered well. ( sounds easy now but imagine the hardship our family went through)

Now the hospital bill hit us. Our insurance would have covered 100% of the bills in 2016 but they changed policy to 90% in 2017.

We are stuck with 10% which is about $6200.From March when she was born to Dec. 2016, Dr. Nishimura saw her at lease 6 times.

Had Dr. Nishimura caught the problem, we’d have had a less invasive surgery and 100% covered by insurance.

I have been seeing Dr. Nishimura since my first kid was born so it’s been 7 years.

It has been going fine, otherwise I wouldn’t have been taking my 2nd and 3rd kids there.

I didn’t have anything against her. I understand this was a unfortunate mistake, nothing was done intentionally.

I can’t change what happened so I might as well move forward the best I can.

I figured to have her pick up that 10% and move on. I have no intention to hurt her practice or license.

And I hope she would learn and not make the same mistake again.

I called her telling her what happened and asked for the 10%. She said was sorry.

She called Stanford to talk to the surgery team to learn what happened.

A week later she called me back, admitted she caused the delay of the diagnosis thus delay of the surgery. BUT SHE REFUSED TO PAY THE 10%!

Can you believe it!? Our baby, our family had to go through the extra pain/stress because of the fact she didn’t catch the problem.

All I am asking is the 10%… and she said that’s a lot of money and refused to pay!

What would you do? Take her to court? Share the story with local TV station? Contact medical board? There’s gonna be some viable advices out there, right?
