Dr. Heidi Wittenberg

Horrible Experience

I had a horrible experience with Dr. Heidi Wittenberg. After two years of having HPV, the results of a pap smear showed that the cells were no longer normal.

I don’t understand the disease entirely, but usually it resolves itself within two years but in the worst case it can result in cervical cancer.

I was obviously not happy that it hadn’t cleared up and had, in fact, gotten worse.

During my first visit Dr, Wittenberg did a small biopsy.

She also drew a picture of a scale with cancer on one end and totally fine on the other.

She told me I was at the totally fine end of the scale.

Then I got a call that the biopsy didn’t look good and that I would have to come in for a LEEP procedure, one in which they use an electrified wire to cut off the end of your cervix and hopefully any potential cancer with it.

So I wasn’t happy about my health and I wasn’t happy about having the end of my cervix cut off, but I don’t blame the doctor for that.

I don’t even blame her that she cut a blood vessel – I mean, when you’re cutting into someone’s flesh, it can happen.

I do blame her for how she handed the “bleeder” as she called it.

Basically, I was in the stirrups for two hours as she struggled to stop the bleeding.

She did not have the proper needles or thread in her office to put a stitch in to close it.

It’s an effing gynecologists office! They should probably have some vagina-specific needles on hand!

She called all of the other medical staff into the office.

I had four women all crouched over peering into my vagina coaching each other on how to get the stitch in. “Try a back hand stitch with your left hand.”

She asked someone to get something from the pharmacy downstairs.

She never told me what it was, but I think it was a topical sealant type thing.

She asked for one brand/medication, then another.

The nurse or whoever called down, said they had a third type.

“Yes!” she said, cutting the nurse off. It seemed that she thought she was being funny by sounding so urgent and not listening to the nurse describe the medication.

Maybe she already knew what the nurse was saying, but I didn’t think it was funny.

She also said, twice, in a super cute voice, “you scared me!” Like ha ha!

Actually, doctor, you didn’t scare me, but I was incredibly uncomfortable and baffled by your pretty ridiculous professional behavior.

During this appointment, that scale with me way down at the ‘no cancer’ end was totally out the window.

She told me that it was unusual for there to be a blood vessel there, so she thought that there might be some kind of growth (cancer) going on.

I laid there for two hours with a crowd of strange women peering in my vagina, crying and thinking about how I would probably have to have a hysterectomy.

Then, know what? After she got the bleeding to stop with what ever medicine she got, she ripped out the speculum which by this time had all of my pubic hair stuck to it with dried blood. I don’t expect spa treatment at the gynecologist, but really, a little consideration.

I’m sorry this isn’t better, but I just wanted to share my story.

Maybe what happened with me is unusual, but any doctor should be prepared for things like this which might come up during a routine procedure.

I couldn’t believe how unprepared she was.

My son and daughter-in-law are both surgeons and treat their patients with kindness and respect.

I’ve been thinking I should write a review after a very bad experience with this doctor. I’ve been reading all the reviews before writing mine and am amazed at the conflicting experiences. I found her completely insensitive. I so hoped to discuss possible solutions to a serious problem she’s supposed to be an expert on.

She took a history typing without hardly looking at me and told me she needed to examine me before any recommendations. She then performed a procedure – twice – that was very painful with no discussion as to options and no warning about the discomfort.

Perhaps she’s too young to understand what vaginal dryness feels like, but she certainly ought to know about it. The procedure was a disaster and I had a painful problem in the middle of that night after suffering the rest of that day. When I returned she didn’t even see me when told of my difficulty, but her nurse practitioner at least answered some questions.

I think the doctor must have skipped the classes on bedside manor at medical school. Why would I expect sensitivity from a doctor who wears motorcycle boots in the exam room anyway. My son and daughter-in-law are both surgeons and treat their patients with kindness and respect.

Eek! Me thinks NOT is correct!

Heidi Wittenberg missed the memo, “…doctor do no harm.” In under one week, mid-tests, I was shut-out of her practice because I dared to ask a question. This question went 3rd-party via her office staff, nevertheless, I was immediately frozen out of the practice, and invited never to return?

It was apparent to me that she has a rather large and fragile ego which doesn’t like tampering with.

On my 2nd and last visit, accompanied by my daughter, I was waiting in her examing room for someone to return with orders. They never came. I got dressed and we eventually went into the lobby everyone was gone. You could hear them at lunch in the back of the office!

I’m 71 yrs old. Have bleeding problems. The practice freeze-out was done at a time that feels so medically negligent. It was enough to notice that she had no bedside manners, no compassion, no consciousness of her patient– neither at the moment and nor later on.

I received telephone notice from one of her clerks that I had a infection. A clerk called in a script for antibiotics at my pharmacy with no medical follow-up. I was told to find another gynecologist, and that I needed another invasive test.

OUCH! I was shut out. Wittenberg apparently decided we were not a doctor/patient match. I groveled myself and wrote her a please forgive me letter, telling her a list of stressors have been which were causing serious depression.

Now I need surgery and I do not have a gynecologist.

I still think she’s personable and generally a nice person. I don’t care if my gynecologist is a saint of a “rockstar” as another viewer stated, I just want her to be compassionate, smart, have common sense, sound judgement and good bedside manner. Looking back I think Dr. Wittenberg has a lot of knowledge but she has shown me none of these attributes.

In my case I I had a surgery scheduled with her, in the meantime I had some serious health concerns (major pain), I called her office as the pain was concerning me. Her “right hand” medical assistant, Donna, who is anything but professional said “what do you want us to do about it?”. Then her medical assistant told me just to take Tylenol. I had to beg for an ultrasound. I had to call three times and refuse to take no for an answer just to get the test that I needed.

After that – about a week later- I had some serious questions so I called several times asking to talk to Dr. Wittenberg for five minutes. She must tell her staff to mitigate all calls. Donna refused to let me talk to Dr. Wittenberg. For over a week I called and Donna tried to relay my questions (incorrectly). She wouldn’t just let me talk to the doctor. I finally took it upon myself to fax Dr. Wittenberg my questions and her responses were blatantly offensive given my medical history.

I had a terrible experience with Dr Wittenberg.

I had a terrible experience with Dr Wittenberg. I had a different doctor within the practice but Dr Wittenberg delivered my baby. On the day my baby was born I was admitted to CPMC at 6cm dilated – I had very painful contractions as I was having back labor.

The anaesthetician admitted an epidural which was great and I was proceeding nicely and was being helpd along by a CPMC midwife who was fantastic. As my contractions escalated and I was reaching 10cm dilation, the midwife kept coaxing me along. Dr Wittenberg breezed in at 11am and told everyone that I had to have the baby by 12pm (did she want to leave by 12pm ?

did she have a prior engagement?). I asked if there was a reason why the rush or if the baby was in trouble. She brushed my questions off. The midwife protested and said that I was doing nicely and if I kept on progressing then the baby would come out as nature intended (and according to my birth plan) but Dr Wittenberg snapped at her and said no she wanted the baby out by 12pm.

She then made me push and tried every possible means to get the baby out (forceps, vacuum etc) which didn’t work. Eventually after a tremendous amount of pushing my baby did arrive – in perfect health. Unfortunately because of the nature of the birth I had absolutely horrific tearing – so much so that I could barely sit down or walk for three weeks. There was no episiotomy and little support on reparing the damage.

I believe my baby was rushed and I would not recommend Dr Wittenberg. I had a fantastic experience becoming a mother but it has taken me a long time to get over this birth experience and I correlate it directly with Dr Wittenberg and her lack of communication and empathy (by comparison the experience of the birth my second child, also at CPMC, was fabulous, even fun – because the doctor was careful, communicative and caring)

    fortunately I ignored that advice.

I have to wonder how many of the good reviews actually had Dr. Wittenberg deliver a child. She delivered my son and was great throughout the pregnancy. My regular doctor had retired so that was the first time I saw her. I needed to have a c-section — which she messed up, leaving me infertile for the next 3 years.

Immediately folowing the c-section I tried to get an appointment as I had a high post-partum temperature I was unable to book an appointment again to see her. Actually, following the delivery was the last time I saw her as she cancelled my yearly exam the day before and I was told it would take six months to get another appointment. Fortunately I found a specialist in Los Angeles who was able to identify what Dr. W did to my uterus (sutured it shut) and fix it (three operations).

Clearly she only has time for prenatal appointments and will not bother with you after. That combined with the gross negligence I received in operating room is horrific. I was also discouraged to breast feed by her — fortunately I ignored that advice.

I have contemplated legal action but decided just warning others was enough. BEWARE.

I can’t say enough about how much to avoid Heidi Wittenberg. If you have a very easy pregnancy with no complications, yes, you’d like her as she’s very personable. However, she downplayed my complaints about contractions and I ended up having my twins at 31 weeks.

One now has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy which could be due to being premature. She also blew off my post partum depression and when I told her I was having a bad reaction to the Zoloft, I was told to “stick it out.” I was allergic to it. I ultimately saw someone else who prescribed something better which has worked well.

She never called me to check on how I was doing when I cancelled future appointments after a miscarriage. Her nurse blew me off when my C section incision opened up and was BLEEDING. I could go on and on. I am really not a difficult patient.

I love my other doctors. However, the list of errors she and her staff made goes on and on. I have contemplated legal action but decided just warning others was enough. BEWARE.

Zero stars if that were an option.

Dr. Wittenberg performed a c-section to deliver my son that left me with Asherman’s Syndrome – a preventable condition that was a result of the surgery.

We are now working with an RE and will only be able to conceive again through IVF. Dr. W’s office has been uncooperative and she was too booked to even see me post delivery. Zero stars if that were an option.

    Never Again

I have read all the reviews, and have to believe that Dr. Wittenberg is awesome. However, my experience has been vastly different. As an individual, and I am sure as a doctor she is top notch. My wife and I are due to deliver in September, and having read the reviews, we got on the schedule to be one of Dr. Wittenberg’s patients.

That is where things went south. I believe that Dr. Wittenberg would be far better off if she had far fewer patients. The staff handling appointments are anything but versed in customer service. My wife asked that they call in a prescription for prenatal vitamins. They said they would do it and on two separate occasions we went to the pharmacy, and they had not been called in. They were not even apologetic. They all seem way too busy.

Afterall, this is our baby. We were schedule for our 3rd visit, where we would have our ultrasound, and learn the baby’s sex. This is a very exciting visit. Yesterday, we were called and told that Dr. Wittenberg was going to have to cancel the appointment, and that someone other than Dr. Wittenberg would be performing the ultrasound, at some other location other than their offices. We feel like cattle. There is no personal service, no feeling like they are in the business of helping to bring new people into the world.

It saddens me to write this, as I have seen all the glowing reviews. I think we will probably find another doctor, someone whom we feel actually is vested in the delivery of our child. (I have to believe there are others out there with similar experiences, and would love to hear them).

I am so glad to have found her.

I had surgery with this Dr about 9 weeks ago. This is my 3rd surgery in 9 months for the same issue but not with her. She is just wonderful and her staff is also, love them all. I am so glad to have found her.

    She's the best

She’s the best, I would give her ten stars if I could. Doesn’t get any better than this doctor.

  11. Mike Sanchez

She has delivered both of my children and always followed up w/ me in the hospital.

I have been seeing Dr. Wittenberg for over 6 years and she is fantastic. She is caring, professional and extremely knowledgeable. I will agree that her office is extremely busy but the nurses always promptly call me back and I’ve never had an issue getting a prescription. She has delivered both of my children and always followed up w/ me in the hospital.

I don’t agree w/ the review that states Dr. Wittenberg insists on delivering all of her patience’s babies. She is overbooked and not on call 24/7 so I don’t see how this is possible. I do think she tries her best and does what she can. I highly recommend her as an OBGYN.
