The Jefferson

The Jefferson is Scam

This review is in regards to the afternoon tea at The Jefferson. I could have not reported them if the food were above the par but had to taste the shit loads. The Good: Amazing space, well appointed setting and impeccable service. The Okay: Small selection of teas, but very nice teas offered. The Bad: Selection and quality of food. No food menu (only tea selection) for afternoon tea posted on their website.

I have been to over 20 afternoon teas around the country for the past 10 years. This is one of the prettiest and most formal surroundings I’ve been too. The Jefferson Hotel is stunningly beautiful and formally decorated. The courtyard where the tea is held is no exception. It’s a very quiet and elegant setting.

Definitely not a place to bring young children (a plus for couples and people that prefer a child-free atmosphere like myself). Service by the staff was gracious and impeccable. No complaints there at all. We also attended tea on a Sunday, so valet was free. Also a plus.

The tea selection was small compared to other teas, but the three teas that were chosen by the table were great (Assam, Equilibrium and Herb Ginger). All teas were served loose. The tea strainer with attached swing-style drip bowl was very cute (I have never seen that specific type used before at a tea house).

Now we come to the food. There was only one exception to my negative comments about the meal: the scones. The scones were very good, about the size of a medium sized apple, piping hot when they came to the table and served with clotted cream, peach jam or cranberry jam. The cranberry jam was also very yummy.

However…The sandwiches however were stale! The bread from all four selections was completely dried out. It tasted like they had been made earlier that day and left to dry out on a counter for hours. The ingredients themselves were okay…But the fact that we had reservations and were served food that was so poorly preserved was very upsetting (especially concerning the price $39-$55).

The dessert selections were okay. The raspberry cookie was decent and the strawberry shortcake was okay. Neither was anything exceptional or different; I could have picked up both at a local bakery. The plain pound cake and chocolate-peanut butter loaf were also dried out and stale like the sandwiches and were practically inedible.

I had a bite of both and pushed them aside. Very disappointed since the desserts tend to be the highlight of an afternoon tea and where a tea venue has a chance to shine and set themselves apart from their competition.

As I said, if the food had been decent and as good as some of the teas I’ve been to in the past (The Phoenician in Scottsdale, AZ has an amazing menu) this rating would have been much higher.

If the Jefferson DC changes there food menu I will be back. If it remains the same, I will not return and encourage others to check out Reynold’s Tavern in Annapolis or The Mandarin Oriental DC for their afternoon teas.

  1. I love the jefferson.

I love the jefferson. class act all the way. I heard that def leppard trashed the whole third floor back in the eighties. awesome!

  2. Thank you The Jefferson staff

This was my first visit to Washington and my mother’s 4th trip in 6 months. She always stays at The Jefferson. We got a very nice 2 double bed room that actually had 2 separate bathrooms. It was a very nice spacious room. Not much of a view but nice room. We ordered room service every morning & it was delicious!!! They were very professional & polite. Such a nice hotel to stay & visit!! Thank you The Jefferson staff

  3. We had a wonderful experience!

The staff was hospitable and made us stay quite enjoyable! The room was a nice size, with a beautiful view and the hotel was simply beautiful. Both my husband and I are from Chicago and never decided to stay at Washington until after our relocation to TX. It is close to everything, steps away from Michigan Avenue. We had a wonderful experience!

  4. I was told we could not get in till after 8pm.

Practically had to argue with check in staff to get room when checking in after 6pm as the room they had supposedly allocated for me was still being used by flight crew. I was told we could not get in till after 8pm.

When I told them this was not acceptable, staff did not seem phased. Eventually a room was found for us without an apology or any sort of explanation.

  5. It left a bad taste in our mouths and unfortunately I do not think we will be returning.

My best friend and I are very close and each year for Valentine’s Day we choose a fancy spot and endulge in a nice day together. We chose the Jefferson as we saw the Brunch Menu was amazing! We arrived dressed up and hungry!:O) The hotel was gorgeous and the staff was very friendly. We were seated in a private area, on a comfortable day bed and overstuffed chair. Everything was looking up.

The waiter came and asked what we would like to drink – we thought why not it’s Sunday let’s get a mimosa. He said sure and went on his way. We continued to laugh and enjoy our lemon ricotta pancakes and three egg omelet. The brunch was highly enjoyable. Until the bill came.

  6. This hotel is fantastic

This hotel is fantastic! The staff is friendly and helpful, the ambiance is amazing, and the accommodations are absolutely decadent. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the small touches (such as the mirror TV, the bowl of bath salts, the wonderful bath products, the large shower, the very quiet room) made our stay just that much more enjoyable.

We ate at the Plume (the hotel restaurant) twice and had top-notch food and service both times. The location made it easy for us to get to all of our tourist destinations. We will be staying here every time we are in D.C.

  7. I went to the Jefferson last night for cocktails with my girlfriend

I went to the Jefferson last night for cocktails with my girlfriend. Everything was going great – friendly staff, great cocktails, etc. until we heard the pianist make loud derrogatory racial comments.

He was saying something about how “certain states were great states because they had SLAVES” in the past. We found his comments incredibly offensive, it just really took away from the class level of this place.

  8. The Jefferson Is Scammer.

I stay here all the time but service is eroding. I’m barely in my room and someone hits the bell and walks in whole I am still in the bathroom, then keeps on going and talking to me! Per- arrival email to the spa, no answer, follow up email no answer (oh well they just lost $500). Checking in room will be ready in 10 mi s, 45 mins later….
