My experience with The Corcoran Group Fort Greene and Dexter Quamina, the agent, was nothing to write home about.
I found a studio apartment in Bedford-Stuyvesant that was reasonably priced and went through Corcoran to rent it.
Dexter called me after I signed the lease. It was due to begin on September 1st.
I agreed that it was okay if my lease started on the weekend. I didn’t want to pay rent for an apartment I didn’t own.
Dexter said that this wouldn’t work and that I could arrange cleaning/painting with the building super.
When I arrived, the apartment was clean, but it was filthy on the floors and countertops.
The stove was also covered in food. I called the super to arrange cleaning. He seemed confused and said he would return my call.
The building management agency called me back and told me to pay the super-cleaner/painter.
Dexter called me to clarify the situation. He told me that Corcoran would arrange for the apartment to be cleaned and that he would contact me later in the day.
Dexter was gone. I ended up vacuuming and mopping the floors myself and cleaning the oven and countertops to remove any caked-on food.
I sent my landlord an email to express my frustration with Corcoran, and I CCed Dexter. I got the following reply from him:
“With all due respect, the previous tenant left the apartment in good order.
Because you needed to move in quickly, the cleaning had to be done.
However, you are still responsible for coordinating with your landlord/management company after your move-in date.
When my lease began, I wanted to move in. Additionally, I shouldn’t have to clean the apartment I rented to make it presentable. It should be ready for me to move into upon my arrival.
Dexter replied that I had called the agency (Dexter) but never heard back from them and that I should be more diligent in finding out what I was supposed to do as a tenant and what Corcoran expected of me.
Dexter responded as follows:
Your frustration should be directed at the agency and how they handle the cleaning matter.
Although they cannot accommodate your request, Corcoran treats its clients with professionalism and respect.
Please let us know if there are many things we can do to assist you in this matter.
Ironically, Dexter was the one who did the cleaning poorly.
He was the one I spoke to, and he said he would contact me later in the day.
Dexter seemed more interested in his back-end than trying to correct any miscommunications.
Corcoran’s cleaning experience left me dissatisfied. I felt like Corcoran took my money, and I was ignored. I became a non-entity.
My concerns about the cleaning were ignored, and Corcoran took my money. I felt like a non-entity.
I am aware that Corcoran is an agency with many agents in all parts of NYC.
Unfortunately, I had such a bad experience with Corcoran.
I won’t be renting or purchasing from them again and will recommend Corcoran to my colleagues and friends.
