The Worst Bank/Credit Union Ever

Rivermark Community Credit Union is the worst bank/credit union ever. There are too many problems to list, but here are a few:

1. Card declined & account frozen when trying to get an uber back from a flea market in Montreal. Not the best corners of the city, it was dark & I was alone.

I had told Rivermark TWICE, that I would be in Canada & for which dates.

Then, had to be on hold with after hours security (which for them is a third party) for nearly 40 min + the time it took for them to resolve the issue, all the while being charged heinous roaming fees.

Also phone was doing to die in which case I would be really screwed.

It was a close call.. Fortunately AT&T worked with me to adjust my fees.

Imagine that portlanders, AT&T was the compassionate and helpful one!!

2. I rarely use checks but recently moved into a new apartment.

I had some checks printed at the branch so that I could send rent on time, for the first time, to my new landlord.

The teller printed checks linked to the WRONG account, the check did not go through, I had to pay a $25 fee AND worst of all, left a horrible first impression on my landlord!! Wtf!

3. I was in Hawaii for a few weeks for a teacher training, six months pregnant.

I took a later flight with a car reservation because in Maui, late at night the taxis can be scant & buses are rare. My card declined!

I ended up having to track down a taxi & go back later only to have it decline again.

As the first horror story, I notified them that I would be there between this & this day.

Talking to them over the phone, they couldn’t actually figure it out until the THIRD try, when finally they were able to allow my CC to work.

So much wasted time, taxi money going to the rental place, and frustration. Why am I surprised?

4. I went to deposit a check for 4k. Then went to get some food up the street on Hawthorne.

SURPRISE, my card declined, again. I thought to myself, that’s weird, I know there is $ in there, before and after that check deposit transaction.

So I checked on the app & it said I was 39k negative! I thought how is this even possible?!Does any bank let you overdraft nearly 40k? Anyway, again, wasted time on the phone, these people are brainless mouth breathers barely aware that they possess a human form.

5. Last horrid offense, and yes I’m going to bank elsewhere. Well I was told I was being sent a new debit card with a chip.

I waited. And waited. And waited more. (3 weeks total) Finally the first approached (of this month) and I needed to pay some bills electronically, because it is after all 2016. (Rivermark doesn’t think so it seems) So I drove across town on a Saturday and waited in their slower-than-mud, BO ridden, SE hipster line.

I ordered a new card & had it printed there. I sent out my new card info to pay some bills and.. I bet you can’t guess.. Yep, declined again.

I called, it was super inconvenient as I was running errands & needing my card (now 8.5 months pregnant).

Apparently the teller ‘ordered my card incorrectly!’ Seriously? Is this rocket science?

This bank does not even deserve one star. It’s a terrible place full of mindless incompetent workers. There are more offenses I’ve experienced but I think these key experiences tell you enough. I wanted to stay because I love the financial advisors and started my retirement & IRA fund with them, but my general banking experiences with them have been nothing but appalling.

    Being a rivermark “Member” is much like a new relationship that is doomed. It all starts out hearts and flowers and then after awhile, you are disregarded as a customer if you don’t do anything more than have a checking/savings account.

    There policies on deposits are poorly written, and I was berated on the phone and told that I had bad money management skills because I overdrew after I made an ATM deposit, and the check was held without my knowledge. DO NOT sign up.

    there are way better unions out there, this one snags you with its APR on checking and savings accounts and then just like any other corporate bank, they gouge you with overdraft fees. They also put a note on my account that they would not reverse any more fees do to the fact that reversed 3 in July when i was traveling and unaware of my account activity.

  2. A quick and easy online complaint to Oregon DFCS at least seems to get their attention.

    I inherited a credit card loan I co-signed for my ex wife. I called Rivermark to let them know I would be taking over the payments and to please send statements directly to me. They said they would. They did not. They were able to send late notices with late fees and mentions of negative credit consequences.

    This went on for a year with many patient complaints and many Rivermark promises. After finally filling a complaint to the DFCS Rivermark said they could not send me a statement unless I transferred the loan to my name only. I did. I specifically asked for statements to be mailed. They were not. I own a small business and write hundreds of checks a month.

    Its easy to forget a payment without a statement, not to mention I like to see my statements. I complained to the DFCS again. Rivermark’s account manager, vice president and eventually president all contacted me with various excuses and reasons why my complaint was incorrect. Circle the wagons and deny everything.

    I had accounts with Rivermark 8 years ago. They could not process a simple change of address no matter how many times I went through the process. Kept my accounts open, but took my business elsewhere.

    I think they have computer problems that result in all kinds off odd and annoying glitches, not really what I’m looking for in a financial institution. Regardless they are incompetent. Looks like lots of people agree. A quick and easy online complaint to Oregon DFCS at least seems to get their attention.

    We switched to Rivermark because of the local-ness and the fees from US bank a few years ago. They are no different. When we talked to them at the Hawthorne location, on Thursday, February 20th, their final response was to find another bank. Worst, laziest customer service I have ever had at a bank. Capital One 360 looks like a better option. I can’t wait to be done with these criminals

    I also have business accounts with Rivermark, which lately personal transactions, on a personal card, have been coming out of my business account for no apparent reason.

  6. DO NOT USE THESE GUYS FOR ANYTHING!!!

    Where so I start. The dealership I went to 2 years ago got me a loan with Rivermark. I wish they never did. I move this fall and needed to defer a payment and the loan the dealership got for me from rivermark was the type that does not defer payments.

    I have never asked for a deferment before and they could not do it as a 1 time courtesy. I am appalled that they even gave me the loan. I went to trade my car in and I am $10,000 upside down on it. There should be a law to protect consumers from fraud. Next stop is the Attorney General. DO NOT USE THESE GUYS FOR ANYTHING!!!

    I am being put on hold a long time calling Rivermark as we speak because I cannot access my account. Rivermark has changed the website or something and now everyone has to call Rivermark, I guess to get into their bank account

    I have always disliked the new auto tellers. Some of the people on the screen tellers are rude on these new banking computers you now have to talk to. You have to yell to give your computer information to the tellers…real secure Rivermark. It feels sterile and everyone has a fake smile, I do not look forward when I go there.

    I can see why these tools have lost their Safeway account… unprofessionalism all the way. This use to be a goo credit union, not so much anymore. I will be leaving when I have time to look for another.

    I’ve been in line for 15 minutes and it’s the same every time I come. This bank is horrible. There are tons of extra empty teller windows but they don’t hire enough people to serve us. Don’t join this bank.

  9. I have been a member here for a very long time.

    I have been a member here for a very long time. However lately the hold time on the phone has ran as long as an hour. You even have to wait to live chat with someone via the webpage. When you go to the Hawthorne branch you can stand in line for over 30 minutes waiting to see the teller.

    Now some of the branches no longer have any tellers on hand just machines. When and if you ever get a live person you get great friendly help. However my time is important to me. I also don’t feel like Rivermark has the small town customer service anymore. I will be changing very soon.
