Eye Doctors of Arizona

hopes of improvement

I was out of town, when my daughter, who doesn’t go to the doctor unless she is bleeding, called me with severe eye pain and was unable to see out of her right eye. This was Friday morning, she could not even see to drive. She was able to get into Eye Doctors of Arizona, but not see the doctor who prescribed the contacts. She was scheduled with Dr. Warren Heller. She was diagnosed with – red eye and eye swelling. No dye was put into the eye. Her pain was not addressed and the appointment was anything but compassionate.

She was prescribed steroid drops. By 4pm she was having increased pain and swelling so she called the office back. They said she could drive back for a prescription for pain medication. However, there was not enough time and she wasn’t seeking pain medication. She wanted to know why this was getting worse NOT better. She was in pain, frustrated, but most of all scared for her vision loss.

We found a practice that was available for emergency eye care even at 5pm on Friday. The doctor put dye in the eye and was immediately aware of the problem. My daughter had TWO corneal abrasions (one was 4mm x 3mm and could be seen with the naked eye with the dye and black light). The provider administered pain drops, antibiotic drops and placed the contact-like bandage over the cornea. The eye pain was immediately reduced.

I called Eye Doctors of Arizona to speak to the practice manager and to discuss what I felt was a misdiagnosis and to discuss my frustrations with her appointment (let me just say, Jessica at the front desk is awesome). Dr. Warren Heller actually called me back. He remembered my daughter and said that he gave the appropriate diagnosis, at her visit she didn’t seem in that much pain, and he educated me that he choose to use a special lens vs.

dye to look at the cornea. He also said that the corneal abrasion could have been caused by the provider who put in the dye (I however, do not believe this was the case). We agreed to disagree. I hope that my comments will help others when facing an eye emergency and will help the practice standardize patient care by their providers…

I’m was new to the area and looking for an eye doctor close to my house. I had heard alot about these doctors and judging by the reviews I was excited to give this place a shot.

I’ve had various eye issues and Dr. Matt Heller was absolutely wondeful. He was very thorough and honest about everything going on. I could really tell he cares about his patients and I won’t hesitate to go here again with any future concerns.
