Nursing - Rude and incompetent

My father, who of course is precious to our family, was a patient at HealthSouth in Mesa. We made sure that someone was there with him 24/7. Nurses were not quick to respond to our requests and at times were downright rude.

Sunday night my father had a seizure or a stroke – diagnoses is not yet complete. My daughter was with him at the time and she immediately went for a nurse. This nurse looked at him, then called the head nurse. They said they would need Dr approval to call 911. REALLY!!!!???? My daughter kept asking them to call 911 and over 20 minutes later they FINALLY called 911.

So the ambulance took him to the stroke center at Banner Baywood. The following day, my daughter goes back to pick up my fathers things. The room was already occupied by another patient. AND MY FATHERS THINGS WERE BAGGED UP IN TRASH BAGS. Way to go HealthSouth – could you make it any more dehumanizing?

Food – awful and unappealing
Nursing – Rude and incompetent
Rehab – this department would get more stars – they are tough and my father made leaps and bounds before he left.

  1. Not Visitor or Patient Friendly

My Mother was moved from the hospital to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of East Valley on Monday, 7/19.21. On Tuesday, 7/20/21, my wife and I went to visit her. My wife was checked in first and when I tried to check in, I was tole there is a 2 visitor limit per patient per day, so I could not see her. On Wednesday, 7/21/21, my wife was out shopping and stopped by to check on her. She had no sooner arrived at the room when a doctor came in with only about 20 minutes left of visiting hours and kicked her out. My mother protested, but it did not matter. This facility is not patient or visitor friendly at all and I am considering having my mother move to a more friendly facility. I would not recommend this facility to anyone with family or friends. It is run by IDIOTS in Atlanta, GA.

  2. Father fell 3 times in their care

My stepfather was in their care and fell 3 times. We experienced inconsistency with both
communication and nursing care ( some nurses nicer than others). It seemed like my stepdad was simply too much trouble for them and by the end they were simply happy to be rid of him and transfer him elsewhere. My family and I were so
dissatisfied that there was not more concern over his falling in their care ( once due to bed rails not being up, once out of a wheel chair he wasn’t strapped into and once off a slide board). There was a serious lack of patience advocacy as well.

  3. NEVER SEND YOUR LOVED ONE HERE

I am so glad that my father is out of that AWFUL place! My dad was at this facility and he fell TWICE in their care – Once out of his bed since they did not his bedrails up, and the second time out of a wheelchair where he was not strapped in and fell right out on his face and has a huge scab on his head from it!

Inconsistencies with staff being friendly, Lack of communication to my mom about my Dads stay and level of care and lack of patient advocacy are among the MANY issues my dad had when staying there.

Send your loved one anywhere else!

  4. My wife admitted me to Health south EV .

My wife admitted me to Health south EV . I could’nt walk because of a broken pelvis and my shoulder was also broken. The nursing staff was mostly great, and pushed me to do my therapy. Their staff Dr’s are marginal. Less then average. The PT and OC staff were great and pushed me to take the baby steps toward walking and enabling me to go home.

  5. Facility is newer and kept clean.

Facility is newer and kept clean. Nurses and CNA’s were exceptional but can’t say the same about some of the physical therapist’s. I was trying to get out of bed and the CNA was trying to help me. The therapist wouldn’t let her help me- said she needs to do it on her own. The thing about the bed is when you raise yourself up it dips in the middle and you are trying pull yourself up and I had very little strength.

I was about 4 days out having been in a coma for 8 days and I had a 4 inch wide about 1 inch deep wound in the abdomen. They put me in this therapy room and I did therapy in groups. Very little individual attention. They try to cram as much therapy in without paying attention to emotional needs. I was in need of therapy but not in the manner they gave it.

  6. Excellent nursing care plus a first-class physical rehab program to get you "on-your-feet.

I am not sure that I have ever given a 5 star review to anything before. I entered this rehabilitation hospital after my THIRD repeated hip operation within the past two years. Excellent nursing care plus a first-class physical rehab program to get you “on-your-feet.”

The previous places I did recovery were highlighted by a few good nurses and aides, but Healthsouth’s staff were ALL superior! I was cared for as family–kindly and with true concern. Just a few of these caregivers were: nurse Pat, Imelda and Amy; aides Gina, Andy and so many others.
