Dr. Yuan-Da Fan

Response Was Not Reassuring

Dr. Yuan-Da Fan may be a good doctor on the medical side, but personally I prefer a different kind of interaction.

I first saw Dr Fan a few days after I’d had a miscarriage during my first pregnancy.

I was kept waiting 45 minutes after my scheduled appointment time, but was then treated in less than 3 minutes (I looked at my watch).

I was expecting to spend a while in his treatment room asking questions, giving him my previous ob/gyn medical history (I’m British and my records are still in the UK), trying to find out if my approach to my health during pregnancy had been OK, and getting reassured that everything was now alright with my insides.

Instead, he wasn’t listening to my questions but talking over the top of them.

After rushing in and performing a very quick ultrasound exam, while talking constantly, he dashed back out of the room.

I continued to lie on the treatment bed because I assumed he was coming back. After about five minutes I got dressed and went to reception, where I was presented with the bill for $180 (I have a foreign insurer and have to reclaim it myself). So far, so strange.

A few months later and pregnant again, I went back but got the same deal – a 45 minute wait, and then a quick ultrasound and he leaves.

When I found him, he told me to make an appointment later in the month.

I asked why he wasn’t planning to do the standard blood tests and general health check, and why he wasn’t making any notes or taking my previous history.

He told me that I’d come too early in the pregnancy (why didn’t they tell me this when I booked the appointment, before I took the afternoon off work, travelled across town on the bus, and waited nearly an hour to see him?) Since I was 5 weeks into the pregnancy, and have a history of miscarriage, this response was not reassuring.

I wanted to ask questions, and he did answer them, but by this time we were in the corridor, and I had to keep saying “hang on please – I’d like to ask you about ….” to stop him rushing off.

So again I got the impression that he was in a massive hurry and couldn’t wait to hustle me out of the door.

HIs answers were also somewhat confusing. Again I then received a $180 bill for a 3-minute appointment.

Dr Fan seems to be a pleasant enough person, and his style may be fine for some – but personally when it comes to my obstetric health, I prefer not to feel as if I’m on a factory production line. I’m switching to another doctor.

  1. I will be happy to have him the rest of my pregnancy.

A few days after finding out I was pregnant I had some bleeding and had to go to the ER. It was too early to tell if I was miscarrying but the on call doctor that night suggested I have Dr. Fan as my OBGYN (he delivered all of his children). A few days later I was in the office and even though I was only 4 weeks pregnant he was able to do an ultrasound and saw that I wasn’t.

It was such a relief and he was very caring and gentle. We’ve been in for 3 other appointments since then and they always see me on time and even though the appointments are quick he is caring and makes me feel calm. I’m naturally an anxious person so when I’ve gone in with a million questions I actually appreciate that he only gives me the information I need for that stage of the pregnancy.

His job is to keep me happy, healthy, and keep me in the present. No reason to stress about labor already when I’m only 10 weeks along. I really like the efficiency and his bedside manner. I will be happy to have him the rest of my pregnancy.

  2. Scammer

    Not a good doctor!

  3. I am never going back in there again!

Dr. Fan was not “in tune” with me as a new patient. He ran in and out the office, interrupted me, looked at his watch and obviously could not wait to be done with me. He attempted to smile (which seemed very fake) few times, but that was as far as his warmth and empathy toward a new patient went.

Then, he billed a wrong diagnoses to my health insurance company for which they contacted me. it took me forever to get his and his staff attention to this problem, and i am still waiting for them to solve it. Needless to say, I am never going back in there again!

  4. Won't go back.

This was the worst doctor ever. The place is not clean, and the doctor told me nothing. Won’t go back.

  5. This disgusting pig should not be practicing medicine, especially on ladies.

This disgusting pig should not be practicing medicine, especially on ladies. I wouldn’t send my worst enemy to this “man” and wrong diagnosis on top of it! Thankfully I went to an actual doctor who helped me. Please don’t rate stars on account of staff, but on doctors services or lack thereof.

(Veronica is terrific). I had nightmares for three days, had trouble walking after appt. SO GRATEFUL MY HUSBAND WAS WITH ME.Thank God I didn’t take prescription, because I found, AFTER A SECOND OPINION, another doctor visit in Concord, that it was not necessary. CREEP.

  6. All I can say is: Dr. Fan is dishonest. Go somewhere else.

Well, a year and a half later, I got my blood drawn for a totally irrelevant reason. The lab tech told me that I could see my results online on their website in a week or so. When I went to check my results, I noticed that there was a lab result that Dr. Fan had ordered.

I opened it without really thinking much about it and saw this: “Culture positive for Herpes simplex virus. Typing of this isolate was not possible. The specimen was recultured but due to the low viral titer we were unable to re-isolate the virus for typing.”

Dr. Fan LIED. He didn’t know which type it was, but he just made a judgment based on nothing more than what he saw. He didn’t bother to be a decent human being and honestly tell me that they weren’t able to type the virus. He just took the shortcut and lied. If you’re reading this, you might be thinking, “What’s the big deal? You still have herpes.”

I’ll tell you what the big deal is: genital-to-genital HSV 1 transmission is EXTREMELY RARE, whereas HSV 2 transmission is extremely common. So this whole time that I was scared of having sex with my husband out of fear of giving it to him, I had absolutely nothing to worry about.

This whole time that I thought I had HSV 2, I most likely had HSV 1 on my genitals. Yes, it’s still herpes, but it’s different bc my husband already has HSV 1! I can’t give him something he already has!

In all honesty, this was the worst lie anyone has ever told me. It infuriates me to the core and I’d sue him for malpractice if I knew how. The amount of emotional and psychological distress I experienced is not something I can put into words. All I can say is: Dr. Fan is dishonest. Go somewhere else.

  7. So did I have it or not?

I had an outbreak of blisters on my genitals, and I went to see Dr. Fan through a referral. He took a sample to run a test and then a few days later called to confirm that it was herpes. When I asked, “Was it HSV 2?”, he said, “Yes, yes, HSV 2”. I was shocked and confused.

I knew my husband had HSV 1 from when he was a child, but he told me he didn’t have HSV 2. Having been with my husband for close to 4 years, I had no idea where I’d gotten it from. I even began doubting my husband’s fidelity, the same way he began doubting mine… I know, I know, they say just about EVERYONE has HSV 1 (oral herpes), but genital herpes is still very stigmatized and nobody ever talks about it. And even though herpes doesn’t kill, and it doesn’t do any real harm, it’s still an incurable disease; it made me feel like damaged goods.

For 6 months, I was afraid of having sex with my husband because I didn’t want to give it to him if I hadn’t already. My husband wanted me to get tested again bc he thought it could’ve been a false positive (I think it was mainly that he didn’t want to accept the fact that I had HSV 2). So I went and got tested twice: after 3 months and then after 6 months (when they say the antibodies will be 100% detectable). Both times, the ELISA test was used and I was told that they NEVER give out false negatives. In other words, if it’s negative,

it’s negative. Both times, my blood work came back negative. Huh? How was that possible? I was really confused. I called the clinic to ask “I was told I had HSV 2 by an OBGYN who ran a sample test… How is this possible?” and all they could say was “I don’t know what to tell you. You’re negative for HSV 2.” So did I have it or not?
