Dr. Secily Bason-Mitchell

Very Negative Experience

Had my first appointment with Dr. Secily Bason-Mitchell at 2:00PM at 2:45PM, I hadn’t been called back and got up the courage to ask what exactly was going on.

The receptionist told me it would another 15-20 minutes.

Meaning she was more then an hour behind for my appointment.

And I’m positive no one would have let me know, if I hadn’t asked.

I came to Dr. Bason-Mitchell because she came highly recommended.

However, now when asked I will only have this disappointing and very negative experience to draw on.

Let your patients know if you’re running behind.

6 Reviews on Dr. Secily Bason-Mitchell

  1. I am sad to see that a few people were not pleased with her.

Dr. Bason-Mitchell has been my doctor for 5 years. I never went to a dr. for a simple gyno visit because I was scared and she made me very comfortable the first time and I continued to see her. I find that she has a very upbeat personality and a positive attitude. She’s up-to-date on research and she talks to me like I’m smart.

This is hard to find in a doctor. She was very proactive when I was diagnosed with fibroids and a cyst and now I am pregnant with #1. I went to see her recently and she was very thorough with explaining things and gave me a lot of information about pregnancy.

I am sad to see that a few people were not pleased with her. I have to admit that the practice she is at is very busy and the staff are a hit and miss. I can’t completely fault her for that. Given how everything continues during and after my pregnancy,

  2. I would say that visit was worth 2-3 stars.

My first visit with Dr. Bason-Mitchell was pretty good. Like another yelper mentioned, she took my history in her office when I was fully clothed which was nice. She took her time, answered my questions, and then taught me a few things about my calcium intake and HPV. It was good, probably worth 4 or maybe even 5 stars.

The second visit was a year later for another annual and it was not nearly as good. She seemed really rush and even though she asked me if I have any questions at the end of the visit. She was literally walking out the door as she answer my one and only question for the visit. I would say that visit was worth 2-3 stars.

  3. Dr. Bason-Mitchell completely misdiagnosed the severity of a condition I had.

Dr. Bason-Mitchell completely misdiagnosed the severity of a condition I had. She told me to “go get pregnant,” which I did. As a result of her horrendous judgement, I lost our son at 28 weeks. Please switch doctors. She is friendly and means well, but she is a terrible, terrible clinician.

If you have ANY complications at all with your pregnancy, go to someone else. I now have a beautiful baby girl and feel so thankful that another OB/GYN cared for me during my pregnancy with her.

  4. I would not recommend her.

Although personable and easy to like, Bason-Mitchell is clearly balancing too much and cannot handle her patient load. She does not return phone calls even when you are calling with major medical problems for over a week (eg, hemorraging after labor.) Begging her staff to get her attention does not help.

She simply does not call you–leaving you basically in a torrent of emotion and in my case, in the emergency room with a three-week old baby in my arms. Leaving a post-partum mother suffering from excessive bleeding for weeks without even a returned phone call –was cruel, and really, just bad medicine because it ended up with me in the hospital. I felt betrayed day after day–maybe because she is so warm and personable–until you really need her.

Bason-Mitchell also gave my son a very weird circumcision. He appears only half-circumcised. My husband said she was in a rush–but my son will have issues for much longer than the two extra minutes it would have taken to get it right. Even our pediatrician was surprised by the appearance. So even though I like her personally, I would not recommend her.

  5. Never Again

I was a patient of Dr. Bason-Mitchell’s from, right as my husband and I were thinking of starting a family. She misdiagnosed a serious condition that a tech caught on an ultrasound (for an unrelated issue). She then told me to “go get pregnant!,” which I did.

I wound up having a severe placental abruption at 27.5 weeks. Our otherwise healthy son was delivered by emergency C-section at LPCH and passed away one week later.

Yes, Secily is friendly and easy to talk to. However, that is not enough, not nearly enough for an OB/GYN. She is distracted, forgetful, and unskilled, particularly with high-risk pregnancies.

I dearly wish I had known that before I got pregnant and lost our baby boy. I subsequently received outstanding care from doctors at Portola Valley Women’s Health and Stanford, and have two beautiful girls.

In my experience, this is a pattern with Secily. One of my friends who was also a patient of hers had a traumatic first trimester miscarriage that lasted many weeks, during which time she saw Secily at least twice.

When she later went back for a routine visit, Secily did not remember that my friend had ever been pregnant. In a second incident, she delivered my best friend’s baby, and didn’t realize that that child was breach until they were in the delivery room, ready to have her.

  6. If you want to have healthy baby and attentive doctor

If you want to have healthy baby and attentive doctor, dont want to have any problems during pregnancy I would definitely NOT recommend you to see this person. That was my second pregnancy, but we moved to SF from Nevada and I had to find the doctor. Somebody recommend her to me ( whyyyyy?????).

I don’t have insurance and I DO have ability to pay. I payed cash for the visit. At the reception everybody asked me about my insurance, about money, they were trying to sell me some products and nobody was interested in my pregnancy or my health!

I called her to make an appointment December 2 and they made an appointment only January 7. As soon as I remember from my first pregnancy on the first visit they usually do an ultrasound , urine sample and at least check you. I was expected the same from such a good place as CPMC.
