Dr. Nicholas Mast

Terrible Experiences

I had a terrible outcome and experience with Dr. Nicholas Mast. His sales pitch led me to believe that his anterior hip surgery technique was less intrusive than other techniques and would result in a faster recovery.

I already had had a “posterior” total hip replacement on my other hip, from which I’d recovered quickly.

Dr. Mast’s surgery was a completely different experience. The day of surgery, he bragged to me that he did 6 or 7 hip replacements a day.

When I asked him if he would be personally doing my surgery, he replied, “this is a teaching hospital.” In any case, the result was sloppy.

I now have a visibly deformed hip and one leg shorter than the other, which has resulted in back and knee pain.

As for my recovery, it was long and painful compared what I experienced with my first hip replacement. This time, I was bed-ridden for weeks in excruciating pain.

When I met with Dr. Mast for my post-op, he turned from Jekyll to Hyde.

My new hip, I reported, seemed to be too high and wide, making my hip stick out and my left leg 1/3rd of an inch shorter than before.

Dr. Mast’s reaction was to fly into a rage, deny that my hip stuck out, deny that my leg was now shorter, and, with red-faced anger, point to the door and say, “Leave my office and never come back.”

It is two and a half years later, and my hip sticks out exactly as much as it did that day in his office.

Other doctors I’ve met with since then have confirmed this outcome, remarking on my shorter left leg and my protruding hip.

One thing I give Dr. Mast. He is a great salesman. I am sorry I bought his pitch.

  1. I was driving and back at the gym in 3 days. It is all truly incredible.

I recently had my right hip replaced by Dr. Mast. Initially I was fearful to undergo the procedure because it is major surgery, and I had already had one surgeon in WA state tell me my case was practically impossible to fix. I went in for a consult with Dr. Mast and my fears disappeared. He’s not only extremely talented, he’s also kind and compassionate.

I have simply never met a surgeon like him before. He is down to earth and modest, for being the genuis that he is. I even moved to the Bay Area for the surgery – that’s how much I believe in him. I highly recommend Dr. Mast to anyone needing a new hip. And on top of everything else, his office staff is wonderful.

You are truly in excellent hands with Dr. Mast and his team. Tomorrow it will be 7 weeks since my surgery, and I am a new person. Was never on pain meds (not even at the hospital, couldn’t tolerate them). I only used a cane for a day. I was driving and back at the gym in 3 days. It is all truly incredible.

  2. Bad Service

I was referred to Dr. Mast by another orthopedic surgeon who said he would send his own wife to Dr. Mast. I was nervous and scared about having a hip replacement at such a young age (39), but Dr. Mast and his team did an amazing job. Couldn’t be happier with the results and especially the care I got from Dr. Mast and his PA’s.

They were all so kind and attentive to my needs. I will also need to have my other hip replaced and I will not hesitate to go back to Dr. Mast and look forward to the continued care I will get from him. I would recommend him to any one of my family or friends.

  3. Never Again

I’m celebrating the 1-year anniversary of my hip replacement with this review of Dr. Mast. Just this week, while walking my dog, I remembered that my hip used to hurt so much that I’d have never adopted a dog last October if Dr. Mast had not given me back the ability to love walking again! And hiking, and exercising . . .

anything I want to do, at 72, and beyond! His supportive demeanor, his impeccable expertise, and his highly professional staff made the experience and the outcome outstanding. I’m so glad someone in Oregon recommended the Anterior Hip Replacement Procedure, and that I waited until I moved to the Bay Area and found Dr. Mast before having the surgery!
