Dr. James Piepergerdes

Wast Of Time And Money

AVOID Dr. James Piepergerdes and go find another allergist. I found Dr. James Piepergerdes through SF Otolaryngology.

I was initially referred to Dr. Fast for allergies; however, Dr. Fast didn’t have appointments available for months, so the admin said I could consult with Dr. James Piepergerdes instead, who’s available within a couple of weeks (now I know why he’s so free).

Big mistake. I’ve been coming to Dr. P for allergy shots for about 2.5 years, and I’m glad that I’ve finally stopped.

Initial consult is as described by the other reviewer.

You come in, get a skin prick allergy test, his technician administers this test, then you meet with Dr. P, who suggests immunotherapy either with drops or allergy shots.

Allergy shots is covered by insurance, so I went with that for the next 2.5 years.

What the other reviewer said was right about this place not keeping good records.

I started coming here in January (I double checked my calendar entries), yet the staff only has my records going back to September.

They blamed it on using a new record-keeping/billing system.

They’re still using paper records, recording every visit, allergy shots reactions, etc. on pieces of paper kept in this huge binder, which is ancient but would’ve been fine if they could actually keep their records straight.

To second the other reviewer, Dr. P has a string of young technicians and the turnover was extremely high.

I’ve seen 5+ technicians during my 2.5 years. I started out with this one guy who kept upping my dose every week even though I was getting baseball-sized bumps on my arms the day after each shot; no problem, I thought I was progressing. But after he quit, I was getting another technician who lowered my dose with the slightest reaction because she was over-cautious. There is just no consistency amongst the technicians. Some are nicer than others.

After 2.5 years, I have yet to reach the “maintenance” dose, even though I read that most people reach their maintenance dose within a year.

Every time I asked about my slow progress and demanded an answer, the typical reply from the technician was that I have to go talk to Dr. P. Even though Dr. P was right next door, he would not talk to me, I had to make a specialty appointment which cost me $50 after insurance.

I did so, and spent 30 minutes going in circles with him yielding no useful information.

He just gave the typical, “People progress at different speeds,” sorta glossed over my charts, and called it a day.

Total waste of money. Another typical reply was, “Some people end up coming here for 5 years.”

Ridiculous and probably just a way for them to get more money out of you.

Allergy shots only have drop-in hours, and was disorganized and frustrating.

Sometimes the place is extremely crowded, and on most days, even if you come at a less busy time, you end up spending an hour there.

You see, you have to wait a long time to get your shots, then wait 30 minutes inside the office after you get your shots so the technician can read your reactions.

The technicians are supposed to have a timer that alerts them after your 30 minutes have passed, but sometimes they’re just dilly-dallying back there and not calling you.

Here’s the kicker, after 2.5 years, I finally stopped going because there was no improvement at all for my allergies.

In fact, my allergies now are worse than ever even though it’s not peak allergy season.

I was sick of paying them money for no results, and sick of waiting to reach that “maintenance” dose that I was supposed to have reached a year ago.

I don’t even know if they did my skin prick test right. Too frustrating, too much of a waste of time and money.

Go to a doctor that actually cares about their patients, keeps good records, and properly monitors your progress.

The high turnover of technicians and the poor record-keeping are all very bad signs about this place.
