Ascension Via Christi St. Francis

Her Care On This Floor Horrific

I WOULD NOT GO TO THIS HOSPITAL EVER! My mother was 82 and life flighted from Coffeyville to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis so that any treatment and care would be near her main Kidney and Heart doctor.

She entered the hospital with total kidney failure and in the ICU (4th floor) received dialysis for the 1st time.

Her care there in ICU was fair under the circumstances.

We knew this would be a tough road, but we didn’t expect it to become a 5-week nightmare that culminated with my mother passing away.

My mother received care ( if you can call it that ) from at least 50 different nurses and CNA’s
During the first 2 weeks the response time to her needs wasn’t great but workable.

In the first 2 weeks she did not receive any kind of offical bedbath. Imagine how you would feel.

By the beginning of the 3rd week my mother was moved to her third location.

A hospital within their hospital. This floor the 6th floor – Select Specialty Hospital.

I was told that she was moved here to begin rehabilitation because her vitals were now controlled and to get her ready to move home. Her care on this floor horrific!

My mother had not yet been further out of bed than sitting at the side of the bed.

Her rehab was very little because the dialysis was taking all that was left of her heart action.

Her personal care by the nurses, CNA’s under their floors supervision was a total failure.

She would ring the nurses button requesting a bedpan and not once did they make it in time.

It would take them sometimes up to an hour to get into her room to clean her up after the fact.

So my mom thought well I will start asking early. If they got the bedpan under her in time they left it there for 45 minutes to an hour.

Or when she would ask me, her daughter to put it under her I would find the bedpan unclean in the bathroom, so I couldn’t use it. (The stench was horrible.)

In the last 4 days of her life she was switched to Comfort Care within the same floor.

This care was a little better because by then mom mother had very little needs.

The head nurse and case manager of the floor were aware of our concerns by now.

BUT the response was still over 1/2 an hour the first time she asked for pain medicine.

She was in great deal of pain. Lastly was the rude treatment to me on the day of my mom’s passing.

It was a Saturday the nurse who had been assigned to mom through the night was thoughtful and quick to respond.

BUT the day nurse was just full of himself. I called to the nurses station that I thought my mom was gone.

I waited a good 5 minutes then stepped outside her door to see this nurse walking slowly down the hallway to my mother’s room.

He came in listened to her vitals, turned around to leave, not saying a word.

I stopped him and asked, “Did you hear anything?” He said, “No, but I will need to get another nurses opinion.”

He then slowly walked back to the nurses station to get another nurse.

More than15 minutes later another nurse came rushing in and made the final declaration with kindness and care while the male nurse stood behind acting like no big deal.

No doctor was called in, and when I asked for a time of death neither had an answer except to guess.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOSPITAL TO ANYONE, EVER!!

  3. Never Again

The nurses in the e.r. were not professional. My husband was taken to the hospital because on the night of the 4th. He had been celebrating. He got to wear he could not breath.

He was rushed to the emergency room at Via Christie St. Fraince. By the time we got there my husband’s breathing was very shallow. The nurses that responded to him Made it seem as his life was not importation enough.

They were dragging there feet They also made all of us feel that since he had been drinking that he was not worth saving. When did nurses become judge mental ppl? I was a L.P.N. I Become a nurse to help ppl not judge them. So bewear if you take a loved one in for drugs or alcohol I pray that you don’t experience this kind of treatment
